Presenter submissions for PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY due Monday

LLCC’s Fall Professional Development Day will be held on Tuesday, November 1, 2016. It is a great opportunity to share ideas, support your colleagues, learn something new or expand upon skills and talents you already have. There will be activities and breakout sessions planned throughout the day with something for everyone.

The Professional Development Day work group is currently seeking proposals for presentations addressing a variety of topics, so please consider presenting a breakout session for your colleagues on that day. Sessions will be provided that focus on increased productivity, enhanced skills, innovative techniques in and out of the classroom, among other areas of development.  We will also be focusing on professional development impacting two specific goals – engaging students inside and outside of the classroom and working with diverse populations inside and outside of the classroom.

We know that faculty and staff have an abundance of knowledge and experience that may be beneficial to your colleagues, and we would love if you would share that with us!  If you or a team of individuals would like to present a session on Professional Development Day, please fill out the Call for Proposals form.  All submissions must be received by 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 19.  The committee is excited to provide an opportunity for you to share your best practices, innovative techniques and knowledge/experience!

Film series “Through a Different Lens” begins tonight!

LLCC’s Arts and Humanities department will host a free film and discussion series this fall entitled, “Through a Different Lens.” The first film showing will be this evening from 6-9 p.m. in the Trutter Center, featuring:

“Fresa y chocolate” (1994) This film explores the unlikely friendship that develops between two Cuban men who have very different attitudes toward the Revolution. Their friendship becomes the vehicle through which they begin to view the “other” through a different lens which ultimately leads them to a more profound understanding of freedom.

The series is hosted by Ashley Green, Ph.D., assistant professor of English; Paul Van Heuklom, professor of English; and Joseph Hoff, Ph.D., professor of Spanish.

In addition, the Trutter Museum will be open, with culturally relevant artifacts from the Trutter collection on display in the reception area. Beginning Sept. 30, a new exhibit, “Trutter: Black and White,” will open, featuring photos of landmarks designed by Philip Trutter. Film series attendees are encouraged to come early to enjoy the art and history prior to the film showings.

The next films in the series are:

Sept. 22: “Who is Dayani Cristal?” (2013) This film begins with the discovery of a body in the Arizona desert. With few identifying marks, the staff of the Pima County Morgue attempt to identify this body and, in doing so, they begin to put a human face on one of the many migrants and refugees who move through Central America and Mexico to reach the “north.” Continue reading →

UCB helps Foundation Pay it Forward Fund

United Community Bank branches held a casual day to raise funds for the LLCC Foundation’s Pay it Forward Fund with $1,032 raised for student emergency needs. The Pay it Forward Fund was established by an LLCC Foundation board member to support emergency student needs, allowing our students to stay in the classroom. We are grateful to our community friends at United Community Bank for their generous support of LLCC students!

MFP Staples Queue in KBOX

The newly created MFP Staples queue is available for immediate use and you should no longer use the Charge Back Portal form. As with the previous system, all ticket submissions must still be approved by your Budget Manager before the request will be processed.

To submit your request,

  • Click on the ITS Service Desk icon on your desktop on campus (off campus, https://help.llcc.edu/),
  • Click on Have a problem? Report it
  • Click on the drop down arrow under Ticket: Select MFP Staples complete the form.  You must enter the budget manager for your department.
  • Click on Apply Changes, then Save.

Budget managers, please be advised that you will receive an email from MFPStaples@llcc.edu with a link to a ticket number. You must log into KBOX first and then click on the link within the email to access the ticket.

  • Enter a Budget Number
  • Set the Approval – select Approved or Rejected and list any notes if pertinent.
  • Click on Apply Changes>Save.

Sick Bank enrollment due Today

The staff sick bank committee recently came together to review the past year’s activity and discuss possible changes for the upcoming year.  It was decided that no changes will be made to the current operational guidelines and due to the current sick bank balance, this year will be a “free year” for current members.

If you are a current member of the sick bank, your membership status will not change. Even though a membership fee is not required of you this year, you are eligible to donate 1 or 2 sick days to the bank at your discretion.  This can be done by completing the attached enrollment form.

If you are interested in changing your current sick bank participation status, please complete the form below and return to HR today.  New members will be required to give one sick day as a membership fee.  Please contact one of the committee members or HR with questions.

Community Garden Farm Stand opens today!

The LLCC Community Garden Farm Stand will open today, Sept. 14 from 11:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m. or until we are sold out, whichever comes first. The farm stand will be located in the Workforce Careers Center with Bistro Verde services. Quantities and schedule of availability will be limited with dates and crops shared prior to the Wednesday events.

The first farm stand will feature kale, bok choi, sweet and lemon basil, turnips, and cherry tomatoes. Delicious samples of smoothies made by the Culinary Arts team will be offered as well!

The high tunnels in the garden are being tended by two student workers who are growing food for the first time.  Please come by to support their work and tremendous efforts to bring you healthy, fresh produce.

Sign up for On My Own Time art show by Friday!

LLCC is participating in the Springfield Area Arts Council’s On My Own Time (OMOT) program. OMOT provides an opportunity for LLCC employees to display original art that has been created outside the office. There will be two exhibitions: the in-house exhibit (at LLCC) and the city-wide exhibit (Springfield Art Association) where first place award-winning artwork from all participating businesses/agencies/institutions is displayed.

The deadline to participate in the 2016 OMOT program is Fri., Sept. 16. All entry forms and fees will need to be turned in to Misty Hagstrom, Judy Jozaitis or Janet Semanik. Each employee may enter up to three works for a fee of $5 per entry. This individual fee, payable to the Springfield Area Arts Council, assists with costs of the OMOT program. All employees who enter OMOT receive a ribbon for their participation. View the entry form and rules:

LLCC’s in-house exhibit will be held Fri., Oct. 14-28 (with an opening reception to be held on Fri., Oct. 14). The judges, provided by the Springfield Area Arts Council, will select award winners at each workplace. The first place awards from each in-house exhibit will be displayed in the city-wide exhibit at the Springfield Art Association (SAA), 700 North Fourth Street, from December 2-21. The city-wide awards as well as the best of show award will be announced at a reception at the SAA for all On My Own Time participants to be held on December 6, from 6- 8 p.m.
