Thirty LLCC students participated in a 10-day agricultural industry tour in Ireland May 13-23.

Tour stops included Kilkenny Mart to watch a sheep and dairy cow sale, visits to local farmers’ beef and dairy operations, and Castlecor Potatoes where a father-and-son team showcased their farm and packaging facility for potatoes and onions. Students had the opportunity to see Macroom Buffalo, which is the only water buffalo milk farm in Ireland, watched as the buffalo came in for milking and sampled the farm’s cheese products. Students also visited Fernville Connemara Pony Stud, which specializes in the Connemara Pony Breed, and toured an aquaculture company dedicated to the cultivation of abalone.

The trip also included visits to iconic locations and historic sites including the Ring of Kerry, the Cliffs of Moher, Rock of Cashel, the Blarney stone at Blarney Castle, Clonmacnoise and EPIC – the Irish Emigration Museum. The immersive and educational experience totaled over 1,000 miles and allowed students to see agricultural, cultural and historical sites in Ireland.

The LLCC Agriculture study abroad experience was made possible by the Kreher Agricultural Trust.

The 2023 recipients of the Dick Dhabalt Athlete of the Year Award at Lincoln Land Community College have been announced. The award winners are soccer’s Madalyn Buxton of Springfield and baseball’s Porter Conn of Le Roy.

Madalyn Buxton is a sophomore center midfielder at LLCC. She was named MWAC All-Conference. She led the team with 9 points, 3 goals and 3 assists. Buxton earned a 4.0 GPA during the spring semester. She will continue her soccer and academic career at Illinois Wesleyan University.

Porter Conn is a freshman left-handed pitcher for the Loggers baseball team. He went 4-1 with 3 saves and a 2.12 ERA with 73 Ks in 46 2/3 IP. Conn earned First Team All-Region and First Team All-Conference. Conn earned All-Academic Honors including All-Conference and All-American.

“Porter had an excellent freshman year. He will be a big part of our team next year,” says Ron Riggle, LLCC athletic director and head baseball coach. “Porter is a great example of a student athlete. I couldn’t be prouder of what he did this year on the field and in the classroom.”

The LLCC Dick Dhabalt Athlete of the Year Award recognizes annually one LLCC male athlete and one female athlete. The award was established in February 2015 in honor of Mr. Dhabalt, former athletic director, head men’s basketball coach and faculty member, and acknowledges his dedication to education, athletics and students at LLCC.
