“The Power of Curiosity” with Emily Graslie

On Thursday, March 25 at 6:30 p.m., Emily Graslie will deliver a live-virtual presentation on “The Power of Curiosity” as a part of the NEA Big Read: Sangamon County. Join us as we learn about Emily’s creative journey as a lifelong champion of curiosity, through the lenses of fine art and science communication. Please pre-register at https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_sYUxB-qPTWuHIFBGiaRDOQ

Emily Graslie was born and raised in Rapid City, South Dakota. After moving to Missoula, Montana to pursue an undergraduate degree in fine art painting, she fell in love with the campus vertebrate research collection as a place of artistic inspiration. What started off as a passionate volunteering position within a small museum eventually transformed into a career as an advocate for these under-appreciated repositories. As Chief Curiosity Correspondent for the Field Museum in Chicago, she served as creator, host and writer of The Brain Scoop, an educational YouTube channel with 200+ episodes about natural history that have been viewed more than 32 million times. In 2020 she made her broadcast television debut on PBS as Executive Producer, Host and Writer of Prehistoric Road Trip, a new series by WTTW Chicago about paleontology and geology in the Dakotas, Montana and Wyoming. Emily has received numerous awards and recognitions for her work, including the American Alliance of Museum’s Nancy Hanks Award for Professional Excellence. She’s a six-time Webby Award nominee and honoree in the ‘Online Science/Education Channel’ and ‘Web Personality/Host’ categories; a member of the 2018 Forbes 30 under 30 list in Education; and was named as one of the Chicagoans of the Year in the Arts in 2017 by the Chicago Tribune. Recently, in recognition of her outreach efforts, scientists at the Universities of Florida and Paraná in Brazil named a new species of butterfly in her honor: Wahydra graslieae.

Gailyn DraperDid you guess that Gailyn Draper is our Songstress of Songs superfirend who uses her power of love and music to make the world a better place? For nearly six years, Gailyn has served as assistant to the vice president of student services.

Gailyn taught voice privately for 20 years and has performed as a guest soloist with the Phoenix Symphony Chorale, Toledo Symphony, Butler Philharmonic the Naperville Community Chorus and the DePaul Community Chorus as well as with our own Springfield Community Chorus. SGA sponsoring T-shirt fundraiser

Action + Awareness = Social Change. Together we can end domestic violence and sexual assault. LLCC Lincoln Land Community College.

The LLCC Student Government Association is sponsoring a T-shirt fundraiser this year to help raise awareness of domestic or intimate partner violence and sexual assault. You might not know it, but statistically, it is very likely that you know someone who has been impacted by intimate partner violence and/or sexual assault. One out of every six American women has been the victim of attempted or completed rape. One in four women and one in nine men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, sexual violence and/or stalking. People of color, people with disabilities and people in the LGBTQ community experience even higher rates of sexual and intimate partner violence. SGA is taking a stand against this violence and in support of survivors, and you can, too!

At LLCC, many of the awareness and prevention programs focus on reminding the community that Awareness + Action = Social Change. SGA has partnered with LLCC Compliance & Prevention and Student Life to provide our community with a reminder of the importance of awareness and action in the form of a T-shirt! All students who participate in Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month activities will receive a shirt. In addition, all LLCC staff and faculty have the opportunity to buy this shirt with all of the proceeds going in support of agencies that serve the LLCC area. Proceeds will benefit Sojourn Shelter & Services and the Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault.

Access T-shirt order forms. Every purchase is greatly appreciated!

Both organizations do wonderful work that helps provide support to victims of violence in our communities. In addition, Sojourn and PCASA both support LLCC by providing programming and informational materials as well as participating in campus taskforces focused on gender-based violence prevention and education. During a time where COVID has halted their usual fundraising events, these organizations need our support now more than ever. Every T-shirt purchased is an important step to a world where we need not worry about the issues that plague us today.

If you are not interested in a T-shirt but still want to help, please donate money to these organizations or any number of other similar shelters/organizations dedicated to combatting violence.
