Cybersecurity: Level up! Recognizing and reporting phishing

Level 1: See it, so you don’t click it.

Level up your cybersecurity. LLCC cybersecurity awareness campaign logo.Welcome to Level 1. This year, cybercriminals have sent over 3.3 billion phishing messages and caused over 4,000 data breaches, exposing over 22 billion personal records. Some of these probably impacted you personally. Our mission is to provide you with some quick tips on how to spot a phishing email. They contain:

  • An offer that’s too good to be true
  • Language that’s urgent, alarming or threatening
  • Poorly-crafted writing with misspellings and bad grammar
  • Greetings that are ambiguous or very generic
  • Requests to send personal information
  • Urgency to click on unfamiliar hyperlinks or attachment
  • Strange or abrupt business requests
  • A sending email address that doesn’t match the company it’s coming from

If you suspect an email is phishing, it’s best to report it. For more information and instructions on how to report a potential phishing email or if you believe you have experienced a cybersecurity breach read more here:

Connecting students with support

Greetings from LLCC Student Success!

We hope that your fall semester is going well. We wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that if you encounter a student needing support services such as tele-mental health, information on food or housing support, please have them connect with their assigned student success coach. Their success coach will work with them to refer to services, either on- or off-campus. If you or the student is unsure about who their assigned success coach is, faculty can view their students’ success coaches via the course roster in Logger Central, or you/the student can reach out to the office at success@llcc.edu, via text at 217-441-2415 or phone at 217-786-2224.

Our Student Well-Being webpage has a lot of support information that students can access, as well as faculty and staff.

Also, Nikki Baker, compliance and prevention coordinator shared a great compliance resources tool for faculty and staff to help support students and find information quickly.

If you encounter anyone in immediate danger of harming themselves or others, please call the LLCC Police emergency number at 217-786-2222.

Thank you for all that you do for LLCC students!

National Tutor Appreciation Week

Please join the Center for Academic Success in celebrating all of LLCC’s super tutors during National Tutor Appreciation Week, Oct. 3-7. Our academic success professionals and peer tutors are working hard to help students supercharge their learning. They break through procrastination. They lift students’ confidence with challenging course content. They power up students’ study skills. Check out the video footage we caught of some of these heroes in action.

We also want to celebrate the awesome staff and faculty tutors in the LLCC Math and Writing Centers, TRIO and Accessibility Services.

If you know someone who tutors at LLCC, please take some time this week to show your appreciation by dropping them a note, email or thank you card letting them know just how super you think they are and how much their work is appreciated.

Do you know about domestic violence?

Domestic violence affects everyone.

According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH), “Domestic violence (also referred to as intimate partner violence (IPV), dating abuse, or relationship abuse) is a pattern of behaviors used by one partner to maintain power and control over another partner in an intimate relationship.” NDVH also states that one in three women in the U.S. will experience rape, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner. Women ages 18-24 generally experience the highest rates of domestic violence.

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) reports that one in four men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner; one in seven have been severely abused. The American Psychological Association observes that there is severe underreporting from male victims because of the stigma associated with males being victims.

According to NCADV, more than 40% of black women have experienced intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner sexual violence and/or intimate partner stalking in their lifetimes. Forty four percent of lesbian women, 61% of bisexual women, 26% of gay men and 37.3% of bisexual men have survived domestic violence. Transgendered victims are more likely to experience intimate partner violence in public.

NCADV asserts, “Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence. There is NO “typical victim.” Victims of domestic violence come from all walks of life, varying age groups, all backgrounds, all communities, all education levels, all economic levels, all cultures, all ethnicities, all religions, all abilities and all lifestyles.”

Forms of domestic violence include battery, isolation, emotional abuse, financial abuse and threat of control of children.

As NCADV observes, domestic violence affects every aspect of a survivor’s life. It is estimated that more than 8,000,000 paid workdays are missed due to domestic violence every year. And the cost of domestic violence was estimated to exceed $8 million per year. This does not include the calculated loss of life and human worth.

Remember, rights and resources for survivors of domestic violence are available on our website.

Questions concerning Domestic Violence Awareness Month may be directed to Nikki Baker, compliance and prevention coordinator at nikki.baker@llcc.edu or 217-786-3426.
