Culinary students are hosting their annual lunch and dinner in Bistro Verde to raise money for student scholarships. Lunch will be served on Tuesday, Dec. 9 with seatings at 11:30 a.m. and noon. Bird Banding Station has exceptional fall
We had an exceptional banding season … we banded 2,670 birds of 79 species, compared to last fall’s 1,902 birds of 70 species! (See the report below.) Three of the species were first-time captures at our banding station: Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Ash-throated Flycatcher and Le Conte’s Sparrow. The Ash-throated Flycatcher was an exceptionally nice find as it is a southwestern species and only occasionally migrates this far east! We also were able to expose approximately 300 LLCC students and numerous community members to the application of biology methods in the field.
The spring 2015 banding season is scheduled to start March 24 and will run through late May. We are very excited that at some point next year we will be operating out of an outbuilding constructed by students in the building trades program.

Lorie McDonald, director of LLCC-Hillsboro/Litchfield, was the guest speaker at the Hillsboro Rotary Club and Litchfield Women’s Club meetings. Lorie spoke to both groups about programs, enrollment, dual credit classes, new initiatives and challenges at LLCC-Litchfield & Hillsboro. The Hillsboro Journal-News featured Lorie in a photograph with LLCC trustee and Hillsboro Rotary Club member Jerry Wesley and also in a photo with members of the Women’s Club.

welcomed Gwen Elizabeth in to their family. She was born 5:39 p.m. on Nov. 24 was 19″ long and weighed 7 lbs. Congratulations!
Openings still available for Practical Response to Active Shooter Training Dec. 12
The LLCC Police Department still has openings for its Practical Response to Active Shooters training session on Friday, Dec. 12, which will run from 1:30-3 p.m. in room 1104 of Sangamon Hall. Training is open to all LLCC faculty, staff or students; however, pre-registration is required (max of 25 participants per session). Please email heather.voyles@llcc.edu to register.
PRACTICAL RESPONSE TO ACTIVE SHOOTERS
There have been approximately 70 active shooter incidents in the U.S. over the past four years; about a quarter of these occurring in schools. If you ever found yourself in an active shooter event, would you know what to do? As with any emergency situation, prior thought and planning play an immense role in our individual response to these highly stressful incidents.
Presented by members of the Lincoln Land Community College Police Department, this hands-on training will provide you with options on what to do during an active shooter incident, teach you the techniques and then give you an opportunity to actually practice these newly learned skills in a supportive, non-stressful environment.
SGA and LAB honored recently
The Student Government Association and Logger Activities Board were honored recently at the Illinois Community College Student Activities Association (ICCSAA) annual Fall Student Leadership Conference held in Godfrey.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Logger Activities Board was recognized with the Creative Marketing Award. The award recognizes creative and low-cost promotional efforts planned and implemented by students. The Logger Activities Board received the award for its promotion of the “Showoff Your Culture!” and “Zombie Apocalypse Survival” activities held on campus earlier this fall. LLCC Logger Activities Board members include: Emily Tomlin of Cantrall; Morgan DeLuka of Nokomis; Conor Ford, Austin Friedmeyer and Emmanuel Olaoye of Springfield.
The Student Government Association (SGA) was awarded the Ed Snyder Merit Book Award for 2013-2014. The award recognizes assistance to other clubs and organizations, student leadership training, community service and governance. The SGA was recognized for its month-long awareness campaigns for breast cancer, autism, and hunger and homelessness; health events; the angel tree activity to collect items for the Central Illinois Foodbank and its “Espresso Yourself” activity, in which students provided ideas for the SGA to act on in exchange for a hot beverage and breakfast treat.

Chris McDonald, Ph.D., professor of political science, was a featured speaker at the Great War Encampment at the Illinois State Military Museum Nov. 22-23 and was mentioned in the State Journal-Register’s coverage of the event.
Martha Miller, adjunct English instructor, is having a book signing for her latest mystery book, “Widow,” on Saturday, Nov. 29 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Prairie Archives, 522 E Adams, Springfield.
