Murray Gallery to feature Illinois State Journal 1929-36 glass plate exhibit

The James S. Murray Gallery opens the spring semester Jan. 12 by hosting “The Glass Plate Collection: Images from The Illinois State Journal 1929–1936” curated by Rich Saal, photo editor at The State Journal-Register. The exhibit is open weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., through Jan. 29 in the Menard Hall second floor gallery.

This collection of photographs hearkens back to the days when Glass Plate Collection 1photojournalists shot images on glass plates. Saal discovered the plates while working on his master’s project in history. He spent more than a year scanning some 1,300 glass plates and matching them with their captions from the microfiched copies of their original printing.

Images from The Illinois State Journal create a portrait of Springfield during the 1930s: its cultural and built environment, people walking its streets and in their daily routines, the lively public square in its role as the heart of Springfield, and the grittiness and personality of a growing urban center.

Important Notice from Accounts Payable – New mileage report form

Effective Jan. 1, 2015, the Mileage Report form has a new look. Please note that the new form requires a specific purpose for the travel being paid. Incomplete forms will be returned to the employee for completion.

This new form can be found in the Accounts Payable documents on the Employee Portal or there are blank forms available in the Finance Department. The old form may be used to request payment for travel in 2014, but the new form is required for all 2015 mileage reimbursements. Please contact Jill Whitney at 6-2256 or Cheryl Sneed at 6-2247 if you have any questions or concerns about how to fill out the new Mileage Report form.

Help students get a great start to the semester by providing directions, handing out student planners and answering a multitude of questions.

2015 mileage rate

Effective January 1, 2015, the standard mileage rate for reimbursement for business-related travel is 57.5 cents per mile. Please note that this new rate is for travel in 2015. Any travel or mileage forms submitted for travel in 2014 will still be paid at the 2014 rate of 56 cents per mile. LLCC students donate nearly $800 during the holiday season

Thank you to our students who graciously contributed nearly $800 to LLCC Foundation’s Pay It Forward Fund during the holiday season. Students were asked to make a donation of any amount to the fund when selling back textbooks at the LLCC Bookstore during book buyback—the week of Dec. 15. LLCC students really stepped up to the call! Donations to the Pay It Forward Fund support students who may need emergency assistance. For example, the fund has been used to purchase gas cards, bus passes, books, tools for auto tech students and course materials for nursing students. The fund has also paid for tuition to help keep students in the classroom.

Bistro Verde to reopen for sit-down meals Jan. 29

Bistro Verde, LLCC’s student-run café, will be open for lunch this semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. Bistro Verde will operate as a casual bistro from Thursday, Jan. 29–Tues., March 3, and will then offer fine dining Thursday, March 26–Tuesday, April 21. Reservations are required; email bistroverde@llcc.edu, call 786.2821, or stop by the café during business hours.

Bistro Verde accepts cash, debit or credit cards; sorry, no checks. At this time, the Bistro does not offer to-go meals.  The café’s dining room is staffed by students from the Dining Room Operations class, and food is prepared by students from Food Production 4. Desserts are created by students in Restaurant Desserts and Advanced Baking and Pastry classes, and bread is supplied by the Artisan Breads class.

LLCC goes smoke-free July 1; resources available to help smokers

Pursuant to the Smoke-Free Campus Act (Public Act 098-0985), as of July 1, 2015:Print

• Smoking will be prohibited on all college-owned and operated property
• Smoking will be allowed only in personal vehicles parked on or travelling through campus
• $25 fine for first offense; $50 for second offense
• Commit to quit! LLCC’s Human Resources and Student Life offices have helpful information to assist smokers, in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Public Health and American Lung Association.

Student Empower course being offered

LLCC has partnered with Workplace Answers to offer a Student Empower course. The message below went out to all LLCC students the week of Dec. 15, and will also be sent to students again the week of Jan. 12. The course is open to faculty, staff and students. Although it is designed specifically for students,  faculty and staff can also learn from the interactive content and activities. Feel free to check it out and then encourage some of your students to do so as well.

• There is a pre-test and a post-test to gauge your knowledge of these topics.

• All students completing the post-test with a 85% or higher are eligible to print out a certificate of completion.

Community Education classes beginning in January

Community Education has several classes beginning in January, including:

Midday Yoga – Eight-week course for all experience levels. Class meets in the Trutter Center from 1-2 p.m. beginning Wednesday, Jan. 7. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a yoga mat.  Cost is $80. Course code: CEW 802-01A. Another eight-week session begins March 25.

R.A.D. Women’s Self Defense – Open to any female ages 11 to adult. The R.A.D. program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques begins with teaching awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance skills, and progresses on to the basics of hands-on defense training. Participants in this four-week course learn to take an active role in their own self-defense and psychological well being. The RAD system of realistic defense will provide participants with the knowledge to make an educated decision about resistance. Workbook provided. Instructor is Brendan Lee, LLCC Police.

R.A.D. meets Tuesdays, Jan. 27-Feb. 17 from 6-9 p.m. in the Trutter Center. Cost is $25. Call 786-2292 to register!
