Keeping connected with students

Kim Young's remote office

Facebook group post: “One of my daughters was tasked with drawing a snapshot of her new day as a result of our current upheavals. I pass that challenge along to you all. Share a snapshot of your new day. Here’s mine!”

Looking for ideas on how to keep connected with your students? Kimberly Young, program assistant, health professions, is finding fun ways to keep nursing students connected during this time of remote learning. Each day she sends a fun “Keeping Connected” post to the nursing student Facebook group. For instance, in honor of the Year of the Nurse, Kim sent them a link to a virtual tour of the greats in nursing history.  In addition, she has started a remote office challenge asking them to share a picture of their new day, and she shared a picture of her remote office accommodations.

Share your ideas with colleagues by submitting them through the online LincIn form (also in top menu bar above), or email kyla.kruse@llcc.edu or lynn.whalen@llcc.edu.

Message from the president

You will get a much more detailed communication today after the cabinet meets to “finalize” our plans. I put that in quotes because this is such a fluid situation, and because putting a college into remote is a steep learning curve for all of us. Again, we greatly appreciate all of the efforts that you have made this week to make this happen and to take care of our students. As I have let you know, we have very quickly been moving staff into remote work mode. We plan to have that concluded this evening. As staff has gone remote, our custodial staff has worked hard to sanitize spaces. We have also been working on a “go to/how to” reference for our website for you and for students. This will be a “one stop” FAQ resource that will organize the many communications you have received regarding future operations and will be updated regularly.

More to come!

Charlotte Warren, Ph.D.
President
Lincoln Land Community College

Be sure to send us information you’d like included in LincIn, including any “good news” you’d like to share. Submit articles through the online LincIn form (also in top menu bar above) or email to kyla.kruse@llcc.edu or lynn.whalen@llcc.edu.

Be well!

Benefit leave time while working remotely

Many questions have come up regarding use of benefit leave time while working remotely. As remote workers, we are all expected to adhere to our regular schedules, either working or available to work as the need arises.  If you should be unable to work or unavailable to work due to illness, doctor’s appointment or other circumstances while working remotely, employees should use the appropriate sick, personal, or vacation time and complete a Certificate of Absence (CoA) form.

Also, many employees have submitted future Certificates of Absence for time they were intending to take down the road.  Please review any submitted time off.  If your plans have changed, please email your supervisor and hr@llcc.edu to request that the future CoA form be deleted.  Otherwise, the CoA will be processed and time will be deducted.

Printing while using VPN and a Remote Desktop Connection

Many of the college staff and faculty have or will transition to working remotely with access to Colleague and other resources while using VPN and a Remote Desktop Connection to their office computer. IT is aware that there may be reports needed that are printed to a physical printer. In order to alleviate potential printing issues, effective the morning of Monday, March 23 all printing from Colleague will be disabled. This will allow any reports and documents printed from Colleague to be available from EasySpooler.

If you frequently run reports that print directly, IT can give you access to your EasySpooler print queue. To obtain access, please submit a Help Desk ticket with the name of your Colleague printer, i.e. ITS01SPLX.  Like Colleague, the EasySpooler application can be accessed via a web browser with a VPN and Remote Desktop Connection (you must use both VPN and RDC for EasySpooler) to your work computer.

If you infrequently run a report that prints directly, you can submit a Help Desk ticket and an IT staff member can get a copy of the report for you.
