Canvas Learning Management System

As LLCC officially launches Canvas this semester, the Academic Innovation and eLearning team has developed the “Did You Know?” video series to provide quick instructions to common Canvas questions and functions. The first set of Did You Know videos (embedded below) are focused on semester Canvas getting started tips for faculty developing Canvas course shells.

Additional Canvas Support:

  • AIeL Open Labs and Workshops: AIeL will be scheduling open labs, as well as Canvas hands-on workshops throughout the semester. These will be included in the AIeL workshop schedule released in September.
  • Canvas support 24/7 support: You may access Canvas support 24/7 through the Help link in your global navigation menu. From the Help menu you can access Canvas technicians directly through live chat support, phone, and the “report a problem” webform.
  • Canvas Training Services Portal: On-demand Canvas training is available to LLCC faculty through the Canvas Training Services Portal. In the training portal you will find a large number of self-paced online workshops and on-demand videos covering a wide variety of Canvas topics and tools. You may access the Canvas Training Services Portal through the Help link in the global navigation menu.
  • Panda Pros: A new support option provided by Canvas is Panda Pros. Panda Pros allows you schedule an appointment with a Canvas learning specialist for a live online meeting to answer your questions and help you setup your Canvas course shell. Appointments can be booked online through the link above.
  • AIeL Team: In addition to the above listed support options the AIeL team is here for you. You may visit us in person (walk-in or by appointment), call our office phones, contact us via Teams chat or video call, or ask for a Zoom meeting.  You may also visit the AIeL Canvas training page for additional support.

Writing Center fall hours and services

The LLCC Writing Center is available to help students with any writing assignment for any class at any stage of the writing process. We are currently meeting with students both in person and remotely via Zoom during all of our hours. Fall hours of operation are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

If you assign any type of writing in your courses, the Writing Center specialists are available to visit your classroom in person, remotely via Zoom, or via a video presentation you can link in your online courses. If there are other ways the Writing Center can support student writers in your class, please let us know.

Math Center schedule for fall 2021

The LLCC Math Center opens for the fall semester on Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 9 a.m. The Math Center is staffed by both faculty and peer tutors. The fall 2021 in-person hours are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Math Center will also be available remotely on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday from 2-7 p.m.

Daymon Kiliman authors chapter in newly published book

Digitally Mediated Composing and You. A Beginner's Guide to Understanding Rhetoric and Writing in an Interconnected World.Daymon Kiliman, academic support specialist for TRIO, has written Chapter 10, “Space and Place,” and the instructors guide in the newly published Kendall Hunt textbook, “Digitally Mediated Composing and You: A Beginner’s Guide to Understanding Rhetoric and Writing in an Interconnected World.” The chapter focuses on writing skills development through encouraging critical reflection on the spaces and places we move from, through and within (physically, virtually and socially) and how those spaces impact our goals and strategies for written and multimodal communication.

The textbook’s approach is summarized in the introduction: “[W]riting digitally is not something special, or something that only happens sometimes, but rather is the main way that we write and communicate with the world, and … even academic writing should be centered in digital tech.” UIS has adopted this publication as the primary textbook for its first-year composition sequence.

Convocation is today!

ConvocationThe annual Convocation to kick off the 2021-22 academic year is being held today, Aug. 20, at 9 a.m. in Cass Gym. Seating will be spaced and masks will be required. There will not be a breakfast this year, but bottled water will be available. If unable to attend in person, Convocation is being livestreamed so that you can still participate (link sent in email from LLCC News).

Adjusted hours for test site week of Aug. 23

During the week of Aug. 23, the LLCC COVID-19 Test Site will have adjusted hours. The available testing hours are listed below.

  • Monday, Aug. 23: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 24: 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 25: 9 a.m. to noon
  • Thursday, Aug. 26: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The test site will resume regular hours the week of Aug. 30 with the addition of Thursday testing availability through the end of the year. Students, faculty and staff will be able to schedule appointments Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

As a reminder, anyone wishing to obtain a COVID-19 test will need to create an account on the SHIELD portal website and enter their respective agency code.

Congratulations to 2021-2022 LLCC Foundation scholarship recipients!

The LLCC Foundation has announced the recipients of over 250 scholarships totaling more than $444,000 for the 2021-2022 academic year. The Foundation awards scholarships every year thanks to the support and generosity of individuals, community businesses and organizations.

Fall Loggers Athletics

LoggersLLCC’s fall competitive seasons for volleyball, women’s soccer and esports will be kicking off in the next few weeks. Women’s soccer kicks off today at 2 p.m. against East Central College. The first home volleyball game will be on Wednesday, Sept. 15 versus Spoon River College. Come on out and cheer on the Loggers! Entrance to home games is free to students and college employees!

The Loggers esports team will also be kicking off their fall season soon. We will be competing in Rocket League (Monday at 7 p.m.), Super Smash Brothers Ultimate (Wednesday at 5 p.m.), and Overwatch (Friday at 6 p.m.). The esports pre-season kicks off the week of Sept. 6 with the competitive season starting the week of Sept. 20. You can catch their matches at twitch.tv/loggersesports.

Donate to the LLCC Food Pantry

LLCC Student Life needs your help! At present, the LLCC Food Pantry is bare to the bones and requires the generous support of its faculty and staff to help fill up its shelves again. To help meet the student body’s needs, we are asking faculty and staff to donate to the Food Pantry.

What types of food donations can we accept, you ask? Well, Student Life can accept ready-to-eat meals essentially. Did you know that the Food Pantry also accepts donations of non-food items? We can! All donations should be in their original packaging listing the “use by,” “sell by” or “best if used by” date as this will assist us in ensuring we comply with USDA guidelines.
