LLCC to host haunted house in October

It's the last exam you'll ever take.LLCC invites the public to a haunted house called “Fear 101” on Fridays, Oct. 13, 20 and 27 and Saturday, Oct. 28 from 6:30-11 p.m. The evening haunted house is recommended for ages 13 and up. A special “lights on” version for those younger and less adventurous will be held on Oct. 28 from 4-6 p.m.

Fear 101 is sponsored by the LLCC Police Department. Students from construction and art classes assisted in building and decorating the haunted house, which is located in the lower level of Sangamon Hall South on the LLCC campus, 5250 Shepherd Rd.

Admission is $5 and $2 for LLCC students.

“Visitors who dare to attend the Fear 101 haunted house will travel through multiple, themed rooms filled with ghosts, ghouls and other scary sights,” said LLCC Police Chief Chris Russell. “Come see what our talented students, faculty and staff have created to get you in the Halloween spirit.”

Bistro Verde open today-Thursday

Bistro To Go in the Workforce Careers Center
Bistro To Go, LLCC’s student-led café, is open today, tomorrow and Thursday this week, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It offers a counter service concept with soups, salads, sandwiches, baked goods, coffees and drinks. It will be open Tuesdays-Thursdays through Oct. 5.

From Oct. 24-Nov. 16 (closed Nov. 7), the café will transform into Bistro Verde, a casual, dine-in restaurant experience.

School spirit abounded at LLCC’s second cardboard boat regatta, which was enjoyed by students, faculty, staff and alumni on Friday, Sept. 22, at Lake Macoupin. The event raised $240 for charity. Boats from 10 teams were on display on the lawn west of the Helen Hamilton area prior to the race:

The team from the LLCC Library (Alexis Rogers, Amanda Wiesenhofer, Skylar Kriegel, Katrina Quattlander, Leanne Roseberry, Scott Ebbing, Jill Campbell, Ryan Roberts, Leslie Ross, Tammy Kuhn-Schnell and Nancy Weichert) with the boat, RV Swan Linc, won the race, fastest boat (time of 2:05) and  best decorations.

Awards were also given for:

  • Second place finisher – SS FAFSA Simplification (Kenzie Chalifoux, Chase Dilworth, Kat Chamberlain, Dawn Burch, Alison Mills, Lara Marshall, Laura Wethington and Gianna Hines)

Wellness screenings and flu shots

There is still time to sign up for a wellness screening and flu shot on Oct. 5 or Oct. 18. All benefit-eligible employees may participate, and for completing the wellness screening and health risk assessment, will receive a $50 Visa gift card!

New: All benefit-eligible employees who sign up for a wellness screening and/or flu shot may do so at no cost to the employee — whether you are enrolled in a LLCC health insurance plan or decline our health insurance coverage. However, only spouses who are enrolled in a LLCC health insurance plan may participate at no cost.

Art After Hours: Today is the entry form/fees deadline

Art After Hours with clock in "o" of Hours. Springfield Area Arts Council.Faculty and staff interested in participating in Arts After Hours (AAH), formerly known as On My Own Time, are reminded that today is the deadline to submit your entry forms and fees to the LLCC coordinator (Misty Schierer). Artwork is due to Misty by Monday, Oct. 16.

LLCC’s in-house exhibit will be featured on the LLCC-Springfield campus in October/November (dates to be announced soon). The artist of the favorite piece at LLCC will win the LLCC People’s Choice Award and receive a $100 Visa gift card courtesy of the Philip and Mary Kathryn Trutter Museum.

This unique program provides LLCC faculty and staff an opportunity to display original art they have created outside the office. There will be an in-house exhibit at LLCC followed by a city-wide exhibit showcasing first place award-winning artwork from all participating businesses, agencies and institutions. The fee assists SAAC with costs of the AAH program.

Join us to talk about all things teaching, pedagogy, Canvas, instructional design, digital accessibility and more. We will be available in-person or online via Teams to answer your questions and to support what you’re doing in your classes. All faculty are welcome at any of our open labs, regardless of teaching modality or academic department.

Digital accessibility doesn’t have to be hard or overwhelming! In this session, we will provide quick and easy strategies to ensure that course materials you host on Canvas are universally accessible and ADA compliant. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss particular issues and concerns and shape the conversation, but possible topics may include: utilizing the accessibility checker in the Canvas Rich Content Editor, interpreting Ally accessibility reports, proper use of heading styles, best practices when creating hyperlinks, alt text for images, how to make tables accessible, color contrast issues, considerations for Microsoft Office and Adobe PDF documents and captions and audio descriptions for videos.

Note: Faculty participants will receive one point toward their Training and Innovation professional development total for successful completion of this workshop
