“Reflection” exhibit opening and reception April 6

Reflection: a reunion of LLCC art alumniThe Trutter Museum invites the public to celebrate the opening of a new exhibit, “Reflection,” on Friday, April 6. A reception will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Trutter Center. The exhibit will be on display through May 18.

Bryon Hartley setting up artwork in museum“Reflection” is the ninth exhibit in the museum and will feature the talents of 15 alumni of the LLCC Art program, their continued connection to the college and the faculty that inspired them. The artwork covers a variety of media, including oil and ink on panel, oil on canvas, ceramic, glass, photography, video and a three-dimensional working arcade game. Many of these art pieces will be for sale, and refreshments will be available at the event. A sample of artwork by Phil Trutter will also be on display.

The alumni featured in the exhibit are Carrie Beard, Denise Blakeman, Sharon Carter, Ashley Dickey, Adam Dupuis, Jessica Gottstein, Amanda Greive, Bryon Hartley, Kyle Kirkpatrick, Nino LoGrasso, Brittney Leach, Maggie Michael, Jeff Miller, Jordan Minder and John Romang.

Next concert in recital series April 8

The next LLCC Recital Series concert will feature the LLCC Choir on Sunday, April 8 at 4 p.m. in the Trutter Center. All LLCC Recital Series performances are free and open to the public.

Message from President Charlotte Warren

Faculty and staff,

I sent an email to you last evening in which you will find several pieces of information regarding work around team restructuring. I shared with you Tuesday the brainstorming process we had undertaken to merge our Shared Governance Structure with our AQIP Structure, hopefully to be more effective and more efficient.  As you review, remember these are larger oversight teams that will create working groups as needed to assist in identified needs.

As I mentioned, work on this project had representation from the Faculty Senate, Shared Governance Council and the AQIP Steering Team. Members included Jason Dockter, Colin Suchland, Karie Longhta, Leslie Ross, Tricia Kujawa, Chris McDonald, Lesley Frederick, Vern Lindquist and myself.  We had three months of lively discussion in working through this process. Now, we need your input so that we can work towards having a redesigned structure in place by fall.

In the email attachment, I included:
1)      a possible functional chart for our work,
2)      team proposals,
3)      a proposal for how deans/departments/ faculty might work together on development and maintenance of academic courses/programs (knowing that we need to address how curriculum/standards work fits into the process),
4)      a document on the processes and questions for a quality institution that we should be able to address and answer on an ongoing basis.

We look forward to your feedback. You can do so with either a response to Bobbi Henry (she will pull together responses and the pass them on with anonymity) or by coming to the Stephens Room or Outreach Centers next week to study these more closely, have questions answered by someone from the brainstorming team and an opportunity to submit feedback.

“Herbaria and Otherwords” on display in Murray Gallery through April 5

art by MazrimThe James S. Murray Gallery is featuring the exhibit “Herbaria and Otherwords” by local artist Ruthan Mazrim through April 5. The exhibit represents a body of work influenced by the tradition of botanical collections that was popular during the Victorian era. However, unlike standard collections, Mazrim alters and manipulates dried plant remains, adding pigment, fibers and found objects.

Mazrim’s exhibit also includes works that incorporate pages or covers from vintage books. “It is a reference to the speculation about the future demise of printed books,” she explains.

Mazrim was born in rural Minnesota but has spent most of her adult life in central Illinois. She studied art at LLCC, Sangamon State University, University of Minnesota, Arrowmont School in Tennessee and Penland School in North Carolina. Her work has been exhibited in Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Seattle and throughout the Midwest.

LLCC hosts La Petite Delta Academy Tea

LLCC Culinary hosted the La Petite Delta Academy Tea this past Saturday. Delta Sigma Theta members mentor eighth grade girls and approximately 20 were in attendance for the tea. Also attending were their mothers and members of the Sorority.  Past president of the sorority, Carolyn Farrar, spoke on the traditions of teas in the African-American Culture. Former LLCC adjunct instructor Lesa Schaive presented on etiquette. Traditional savory and pastry items were prepared by culinary students.
