SBA loans available for employees/students affected by Dec. 1 tornadoes

Kevin Lust, director of the Illinois Small Business Development Center at LLCC, reports that Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Assistance loans are available to renters, homeowners, businesses and non-profit organizations with under-insured or uninsured storm damage in Christian, Macon, Montgomery, Sangamon and Shelby counties. Disaster survivors may receive in-person assistance with SBA disaster loan applications at an outreach center opening today at the Taylorville Fire Department, 202 N. Main St. in Taylorville. The center will be open Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sat., 9 a.m.-1 p.m. through Jan. 17.

The center closes permanently at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17

Help students get a great start to the spring semester by answering their questions and providing directions. FAQ handouts will be on the tables again along with highlighters to help mark students’ routes to their classes.

Dr. Cynthia Maskey, dean of health professions, was interviewed on LLCC’s nursing programs for a Dec. 16 State Journal-Register story on area college nursing offerings.

Jay Kitterman, consultant, LLCC Culinary Institute, turned his column over to Charlyn Fargo, adjunct instructor, hospitality management, for the Dec. 19 Epicuriosity 101 column in the State Journal-Register entitled, “What’s in store for 2019?

Dr. Vern Lindquist, vice president, academic services, was interviewed on Sports Radio 1450’s AM Springfield program Dec. 20 regarding the LLCC aviation program.

Dr. Charlotte Warren, president, was interviewed Dec. 21 on Sports Radio 1450’s AM Springfield program to accept a check from Mark Selvaggio for the Selvaggio Steel scholarship with the LLCC Foundation.

Jolene Lamb, coordinator, LLCC Culinary Institute, wrote the Dec. 26 Epicuriosity 101 column in the State Journal-Register, “Preparing a New Year’s Eve party the hostess can enjoy too.”

Laurel Bretz, director, community education, wrote the essay “Change and grow through continuous learning” for the State Journal-Register “Connections” page Sunday, Dec. 30.

Sean Keeley, culinary specialist, is the author of today’s Epicuriosity 101 column in the State Journal-Register, “Chocolate and Chai.”

Fall bird banding results issued

The final report for the fall 2018 bird banding season (our 13th banding season at LLCC!) contains these highlights:

  • We banded 2,076 birds over 65 banding days this fall.
  • The average number of birds banded was 31.9 birds/day.
  • The highest one day total was 174 birds banded (Oct. 4).
  • We added one new species (Summer Tanager) to the cumulative station total which now stands at 123 species.
  • The five most commonly banded species for the season were: American Goldfinch, Dark-eyed Junco, Chipping Sparrow, Yellow-rumped Warbler and House Sparrow.
  • We had 64 returns (recaptures of birds banded in an earlier season) and 387 repeats (recaptures of birds banded earlier in the fall 2018 season).
  • Our station cumulative total is now at 22,165 birds banded over 13 seasons.
  • Approximately 300 LLCC students and community members visited the banding station this fall.

The spring 2019 season is scheduled to begin March 21. You are always welcome to visit as your time allows!

Winter recess Dec. 15-Jan. 1

Happy Holidays! Lincoln Land Community College. LLCC will be closed for holiday break Dec. 15-Jan. 1. Spring semester begins Jan. 12.LLCC will be closed for winter recess Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018 through Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019. No classes will be held, and administrative offices at the Springfield campus and Outreach Centers in the LLCC district will be closed. Regular hours will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 2.

The LLCC Capital City Training Center, 130 W. Mason, will be closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, and open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 17-21, 24, 26-28 and 31. The Illinois Small Business Development Center at LLCC, located in Montgomery Hall on the Springfield campus, will be closed Dec. 24-25, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, and open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Dec. 17-21 and Dec. 26-28.

Nominations for honored alumni award due tomorrow

As a reminder, the deadline for submitting nominations for the 2019 Honored Alumni Award is tomorrow, Dec. 15, 2018. Nominate an LLCC alum for the award by completing the form that is available at www.llcc.edu/honored-alumni-award.

Nominations will be scored on the following four criteria: 1) role model – inspiring excellence in others, 2) outstanding success – attaining significant career or personal achievements, 3) impact – achieving accomplishments which have changed the community for the better and 4) community service – demonstrating a visible commitment to the community through leadership and/or volunteerism.

Additionally, nominees must have successfully completed coursework at LLCC and be able to attend LLCC’s commencement ceremony on May 17, 2019.
