LLCC Big Band announces Fantasy Concert and Dance to be held Oct. 27

The LLCC Big Band announces a “Fantasy Concert and Dance” to be held Monday, Oct. 27 beginning at 7 p.m. at Donnie’s Homespun in the Vinegar Hill Mall, 107 W. Cook St., Springfield. The concert is free and open to the public.

The band, under the direction of Professor of Music Jane Hartman Irwin, will perform in Halloween costume attire and perform such favorites as “American Patrol,” “Fantasy” and “God Bless the Child.” LLCC students featured include Courtney Fleck, Kevin Carman and Dion Doss. Guests are invited to attend the fun-filled event in Halloween costume.

Parent and Me Holiday Monsters class Oct. 25

LLCC employees and their children are invited to join baking wizard Jolene Adams to learn to make monster cupcakes, Nutella bats and more in the Culinary Institute’s Parent and Me Holiday Monsters class. The class meets this Saturday, Oct. 25 from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the baking lab in the Workforce Careers Center. The class is being offered at a special price for employees and their children. Second annual “Haunted Lab” planned Oct. 28

DSC_8145bThe Chemistry and Environmental clubs are hosting the second annual “Haunted Lab” Tuesday, Oct. 28 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the LLCC-Springfield campus. Children five and older are invited to the free event.

Children will see “spooky” science demonstrations and learn about science experiments they can do at home. Experiments will be conducted by club members under the guidance of Jennifer Ramm, LLCC professor of chemistry. Children are welcome to wear Halloween costumes to the event. Halloween treats will be available for purchase.

Experiments will take place in room 2215 on the upper level of Sangamon Hall. Shows begin every half-hour at 5:30, 6, 6:30, 7 and 7:30 p.m. Children will see bubbles, fire, animals and much more as they learn about science. While waiting for shows to begin, children can participate in hands-on activities across the hall in room 2214.

Alumni Services accepting nominations for 2015 Honored Alumni Award

Lincoln Land Community College Alumni Services is accepting nominations for its 2015 Honored Alumni Award. The deadline for nominations is Nov. 28, 2014.

Anyone may nominate an LLCC alum for the award by completing a nomination form that is available on the Alumni web page. Nominees must have graduated from or successfully completed coursework at LLCC; achieved outstanding success and distinction in his/her chosen field; demonstrated humanitarian service; have a continued interest in and support of education and community colleges; and have the ability to attend LLCC’s commencement ceremony on May 15, 2015.

Past recipients of the Honored Alumni Award include:  2009 – Bill Ames of Springfield; 2010 – Michelle Tjelmeland of Springfield; 2011 – Bruce Compton of St. Charles, Mo.; 2012 – Gregg Humphrey of Springfield; 2013 – Jim Matheis of Springfield; and 2014 – Karla Carwile of Glenview, Ill.

Financial aid certification program–professional development opportunity

A Financial Aid Certification Program seminar is being held Wednesday, Nov. 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Montgomery Hall 1143/1144 by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC). The formalized annual certification series gives professionals a detailed understanding of financial aid programs and systems.  All sessions are offered at NO COST to staff, counselors, mentors and members of the general public.

PTK parking spot raffle this week; begins today

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is holding its annual Parking Spot Raffle this week! The winner receives exclusive use of the Phi Theta Kappa Reserved PTKParkingSpotRaffleParking Spot (located on the east side of Menard Hall) for the remainder of the 2014-2015 academic year. Raffle tickets will be sold in the A. Lincoln Commons from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24. Tickets cost $1 each or 6 for $5.
