Faculty Development: Beyond Laziness: Uncovering Hidden Barriers to College Success

As faculty, we have all struggled to understand why students miss assignments, don’t come to class, procrastinate when taking exams, etc. Instead of contributing this behavior to laziness or apathy, what if we tried to identify potential barriers that might be precipitating these actions and devise targeted interventions to mitigate their effects? This webinar provides strategies to find, understand, and alleviate potential hidden barriers to student success in higher education.

Join us for, Beyond Laziness: Uncovering Hidden Barriers to College Success, this Thursday, Oct. 10 from 1-2:30 p.m. in Sangamon 1102 or on Teams. Register online.

Presenters include, Ann Armbruster, director, student support services; Alex Berry, associate vice president, student success; Candace Silas, director, WEI and PATH.

This workshop will begin with a viewing of a live webinar in Sangamon 1102 at 1 p.m., followed by a discussion led by LLCC staff until 2:30 p.m. Those who attend both parts in-person will receive 2 points. Those who attend only the discussion on Teams will be awarded 1 point.

Officials of Lincoln Land Community College cut the ribbon Monday, Oct. 7, to open the newly remodeled facilities for student services in Menard Hall on the LLCC campus.

LLCC President Charlotte Warren, Ph.D. told the group of elected officials and others gathered for the ribbon cutting, “We are incredibly excited about the redesigned space and centralization of the services available to students. At the entrance, the Student Services Hub is a one-stop-shop for student services on campus, making it easier for students to get the help they need. It is a welcoming, student-first model that we are proud to offer.”

After the news conference and ribbon cutting, guests toured the redesigned space.

Mental Health Resources

The Mental Health Resources Canvas shell is available to all students and employees.

This shell contains an abundance of information regarding mental health and wellness, including but not limited to: mental health information, on campus and community resources, self help tools, national hotlines, veteran resources, relaxation techniques, etc.

Please share this link with current LLCC students as you see fit! With your help, our students can navigate the shell and achieve better overall wellness. Thank you!

If you have mental health information that is not included and you think it would benefit our students, please send it to Kellee Phillips.

Early Alert Workgroup meets tomorrow

The first of five LLCC workgroups, inspired by convocation, meets tomorrow, Sept. 12 1-3 p.m. in the R.H. Stephens Room.

Early Alert

We have tried for years to adopt and use an early alert system. We have had a number of versions, but now is an opportunity to take a look at what we really want this to accomplish and to create a system that is systematic, user friendly, and significantly increases retention of our students.
Co-chairs: Dr. Kalith Smith, Susan Boehler
Cabinet Liaison: Shanda Byer
Kickoff Meeting: Sept. 12, 1-3 p.m., R.H. Stephens Room

All LLCC colleagues are encouraged to join a workgroup that interests them. Diverse input helps ensure that decisions are well-rounded and consider the needs of the entire campus community. See the message from Dr. Charlotte Warren and the entire list of workgroups online.
