Lincoln Land Community College’s 9th Annual Gala is being held Saturday, April 25 in the Student Union. The theme this year is “Under the Sea.” The gala features a gourmet meal prepared by culinary students and musical performances by LLCC’s Stolen Moments Jazz Band and LLCC’s Big Band. Proceeds benefit learning initiatives at the college.
The Foundation is seeking donations of wine or liquor for our Wall of Wine and Spirits. Guests at the gala can purchase covered bottles for $10 each with a guaranteed value of $10 or more. The Corkscrew Wine Emporium is offering a 15% discount on wine purchased there for LLCC’s gala.
Donations for the live and silent auction at the gala are also being accepted. Jewelry, artwork, vacation home stays and sporting event tickets are all popular items. Please consider donating items if you find that you are unable to use them. You may drop off wine or auction items in the Foundation Office. Be sure to include the value of your donation so that we can acknowledge it.
Political Science Professor Chris McDonald, Ph.D., will present “From Springfield to Schlestadt” on Saturday, April 11 from 9 to 10 a.m. The presentation is being held in the Trutter Center at LLCC-Springfield, 5250 Shepherd Road. The public is invited to the free event.
Professor McDonald’s presentation is based on his new book, “‘Three Lying or Four Sitting’—From the Front in a Ford,” which gives an eyewitness account of World War I through the detailed, literate and humorous letters of Springfield native and Harvard student Kent Dunlap Hagler. Professor McDonald will provide a glimpse of Mr. Hagler’s life as an ambulance driver and the local connection to the Great War.
A book signing will follow the presentation. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Cost of the book is $19.95, plus tax. All proceeds from book sales will benefit the LLCC Foundation general scholarship fund in honor of Kent Dunlap Hagler.
In addition to the presentation and book signing, an exhibit containing WWI artifacts is being presented by the Philip and Mary Kathryn Trutter Museum. Items on display include original handwritten letters by Mr. Hagler to his parents, a certified copy of a letter written by General John Pershing to Mr. Hagler and the members of the American Expeditionary Force, the “Croix de Guerre” (War Cross) and citation awarded to Mr. Hagler, the actual tin plate featuring the War Cross that was mounted on the side of Mr. Hagler’s ambulance during the war, plus other Great War artifacts. The exhibit will be on display through the end of April.
Five faculty members have been named finalists for the 2015 Drs. Raymond and Ann Pearson Master Teacher Award. They are:

One of these individuals will be named the award recipient at the annual faculty and staff recognition ceremony on Thursday, May 7 in the Student Union. The Pearson award annually recognizes a full-time faculty member for his or her exceptional contributions to student learning. The recipient receives a $5,000 award to be used to enhance teaching and learning.
Drs. Raymond and Ann Pearson, longtime Springfield physicians, made this award possible through a generous contribution to the LLCC Foundation. The LLCC Foundation would like to thank all of this year’s nominees for their energy and efforts every day on behalf of LLCC students.

Four Springfield education and arts organizations have partnered to present exhibits in March that explore the various ways artists merge language into their visual art. LLCC, the University of Illinois Springfield, the Illinois State Museum and the Springfield Art Association have formed the Pro-Text Partnership, with plans to present exhibits and events at each of the organization’s creative venues.

“Text by Design”
Exhibit duration: March 13–April 3, Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
The LLCC exhibit features the work of more than 40 students in LLCC’s 3D Design, Screen Printing and Intro to Graphic Design classes. The freestanding-designed exhibit will feature large pieces made of cardboard, foam core, wood, Plexiglas, ceramics and other materials and mediums.

“Pretty Thoughts: Works by Mauricio Ramirez”
Exhibit duration: March 8–Sept. 13
Mauricio Ramirez has been described as an architect of letters and icons. Born and raised in Chicago, the urban landscape became his canvas at a young age. Ramirez is a graduate of UIS and is currently an artist in residence at Lacuna Artist Lofts in Chicago. Ramirez’s work can also be seen on walls and freights throughout the Midwest.

“Pro-Text: When Words Enter Visual Art”

The ISM exhibit will feature the work of nearly 30 artists and is curated by ISM Assistant Director of Art Robert Sill. Sill explains, “When words, poetry, or type fragments combine with any form of visual art … it exhibits additional layers of meaning. It can trigger new thoughts, create narratives, produce sounds or even evoke feelings.”

The SAA exhibit will feature additional works by several of the artists featured in the Illinois State Museum exhibit. Artists include Stan Bly, Shayne Brantley, SAA Executive Director Betsy Dollar, Shane Harris, Allison Lacher, Ruthann Mazrim, Michael Miller, Terry Rathje, Brian Sullivan, Kevin Veara and Thom Whalen.
Additional free public events, entitled “Text Talks” are planned at the Illinois State Museum on March 19, April 16 and May 21. All events begin at 7 p.m.

The Culinary Institute hosted Guest Chefs Mike Aiello, president and CEO of R.W. Troxell Insurance, and Sergio (Satch) Pecori, president and CEO of Hanson Professional Services (shown here with LLCC President Charlotte Warren, Ph.D.) for the “Joys of the Table” dinner. The event was a fundraiser for culinary arts student scholarships. The two guest chefs donated their time and paid for all of the food served. The college extends its thanks to them.

The Pearsons, longtime Springfield physicians, made the award possible through a generous contribution to the LLCC Foundation. The award annually recognizes an exceptional full-time, faculty member for his or her professional contributions to LLCC. The 2015 award recipient will be announced at the annual faculty and staff recognition ceremony in May.
In acknowledgement of his dedication to education, athletics and students at LLCC, former LLCC athletic director, men’s basketball coach and founding faculty member Dick Dhabalt will receive special recognition with the Dick Dhabalt Athlete of the Year Award. The award will recognize annually both one LLCC male and female athlete.
Mr. Dhabalt will be recognized with the award during half-time of the women’s basketball game, which will begin at 2 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 14 when the Lady Loggers take on the Lincoln College Lynx in Cass Gymnasium. The men’s game will follow at 4 p.m. Admission for the games is $5 for adults, $3 for students K-12 and is free for LLCC students, faculty and staff with an LLCC ID.
During his tenure at LLCC, Mr. Dhabalt served 20 years as athletic director, 20 years as head men’s basketball coach and 25 years as a faculty member teaching physical education and math. He was selected by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) to serve as the Region IV assistant director and then director of Region XXIV. He was inducted into the NJCAA Region XXIV Hall of Fame in 1991, and is an athlete Hall of Fame member at LLCC, as well as his alma mater, Bradley University.
