Congratulations to The Lamp

The Lamp placed second in the John M. Ryan Best of Show award category at the the Illinois Community College Journalism Association’s fall 2018 conference at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. The best of show award is given to the community college with the single best issue of any newspaper published since January 2018. The contest allows larger and smaller schools to highlight the best example of their work. The Lamp’s co-editors are Niko Robledo (holding award) and Meredith Howard.

The Lamp staff with Tim McKenzie, professor of journalism and humanities

Tim McKenzie, professor of journalism and humanities, is pictured with the 14 Lamp staff members who attended the two-day conference on Oct. 4 and 5. They worked with professional journalists to learn about storytelling visually, writing better and covering one’s campus. The editor and general manager of the Mattoon/Charleson Journal-Gazette/Times-Courier, Penny Weaver, gave the keynote address on how to tell the story while remaining  mindful of one’s community and ethics.

Attention faculty: Student Satisfaction Inventory being administered fall 2018

In 2006, 2009, 2012 and 2015 Lincoln Land Community College administered Noel-Levitz’s Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI) to a group of randomly selected course sections. The results are used to provide feedback to departments throughout the college to inform and improve student satisfaction and success.

During the month of October, we plan to administer the SSI once again to randomly selected course sections in conjunction with our regularly scheduled three-year cycle. So as to reduce interruption of the selected classes, the survey does not have to be completed during class time. Instead, faculty are simply asked to distribute the survey to students to take with them, complete, and return at the next class meeting. This is the procedure we employed in 2006, 2009, 2012 and 2015. Because of the excellent support of faculty, we gathered meaningful data with minimal interruption of class time. However, if you would like to administer it during your class, you certainly may do so. Administration during class increases the response rate for the survey which gives us better data results. If you do choose to administer it during your class, the survey takes approximately 20-30 minutes for students to complete. If you teach a hybrid or online course, please just post an announcement in Blackboard. Those students will be surveyed electronically.

We ask your cooperation once again with this important project, which cannot proceed without your help. If one or more of your classes are selected through the random selection process, you will receive a packet containing directions and student surveys. Completed surveys should be returned to the Vice President of Student Services office, Menard Hall 1256. Faculty teaching online or hybrid sections will receive just a letter and suggested Blackboard announcement.

Sign up now to “Take a Stand” against domestic violence

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, all staff and faculty members are encouraged to join the SAVE Taskforce in taking a stand against intimate partner violence — literally! Symbolic of our refusal to be passive bystanders of intimate partner violence in our community, we will have at least one person “taking a stand” in A. Lincoln Commons from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Using materials provided, participants are also encouraged to use this platform to engage willing passersby in healthy, constructive conversations about domestic and intimate partner violence, encouraging our campus community to “See the Signs, Say Something.”

Follow the instructions at the top of the “Take a Stand Tuesday” sheet to sign up for a time slot. Student club/organization advisors are encouraged to ask organization members to participate as well. Questions? Email shelby.bedford@llcc.edu.

“Tuesday Nights at the Movies” begins tonight with “Lone Star”

The Arts and Humanities Department at Lincoln Land Community College presents Tuesday Night at the Movies
The LLCC Arts and Humanities Department invites the public to a free film and discussion series entitled, “Tuesday Nights at the Movies.” The first film showing will be of “Lone Star” tonight at 6 p.m. in Menard Hall, Room 2209.

Oct. 9: “Lone Star” (1996) – Set in a fictional Texas border town called Frontera, “Lone Star” explores the intersections among cultures and families who are struggling to come to terms with their pasts, relationships and identities. As personal and sometimes conflicting narratives unfold, so do the details surrounding a local mystery that one man is determined to solve. What he finds ultimately opens a pathway to acceptance and healing.

Other films in the series will include “Enemy” (2013) on Nov. 13, “Silence” (2016) on Feb. 12, and “Born Into Brothels: Calcutta’s Red Light Kids” (2004) on March 19. Read more about these films.

The films will be hosted by Dr. Deborah BrothersJohn Paul Jaramillo and Cara Swafford, professors of English; Joseph Hoff, professor of Spanish; and  LLCC students.
