October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Please consider attending an event or participating in an activity during awareness/education events at LLCC during the Week of Action, Oct. 15-19, 2018. More information will be in the LincIn in coming days.

“Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner. Abuse is physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. This includes any behaviors that frighten, intimidate, terrorize, manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, injure or wound someone. Domestic violence can happen to anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender. It can happen to couples who are married, living together or who are dating. Domestic violence affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels.” (www.ndvh.org)

Domestic violence is a community issue; it is not “just a family problem.” Statistics indicate that one in four women and one in nine men will experience domestic violence in their lifetimes (www.ndvh.org). During the month of October, national hotlines, domestic violence service providers, state and local governments as well as colleges remind us of this epidemic that cuts across racial, socioeconomic and educational lines. DV is 100 percent the fault and choice of the abuser; it is not the victim’s fault, and victims are not alone. Radiography class with Pigg-O-StatMemorial Medical Center has donated a Pigg-O-Stat pediatric immobilization device to the LLCC Radiography program. The Pigg-O-Stat is used to securely hold infants and toddlers when chest x-rays are needed. LLCC radiography students will use the device to practice the procedure. “This gift will have a big impact on the students,” says Janelle Murphy, director of the associate degree radiography program. “Memorial has always been kind enough to let us borrow a Pigg-O-Stat each year, but now we’ll be able to offer additional training on campus once students use it clinically.”

The $275,000 welding lab project was funded through an anonymous gift combined with LLCC Foundation and college funds. “This project significantly enhances the experience of LLCC’s welding students in Taylorville and surrounding communities,” said Dr. Charlotte Warren, president of LLCC. “The project includes new welding lab equipment, new flooring and welding curtains, and energy efficient ventilation and lighting systems. Additionally, thanks to the Bertrand Hopper Memorial Foundation and its board members, we were able to purchase a band saw. We are so excited about the opportunities that this project will create for our students. This program truly has the ability to put our community members to work!”

Marty Swan, construction occupations coordinator at LLCC-Taylorville, said the new equipment includes 12 machines that will each perform MIG, TIG and stick welding. “This is a big advantage to students and allows us to expand our enrollment. Instructors Mike Hazdra and Red Tomnitz are two of the finest welding teachers anywhere.” He added that the job market for welders is “fantastic. Our graduates can leave here and go immediately to employment.”
