Easy way all faculty and staff can support students

LLCC’s Strategic Goal #1 is to “increase our students’ persistence and completion rates and resolve barriers to enrollment.” A way each of us can support this strategic goal is to refer students to their assigned success coach. The assigned success coach can be viewed in the student’s LoggerCentral account as well as on the faculty class roster on LoggerCentral (click View Profile). The success coach will talk with their student and discuss how we can help them reach their goals. Success coaches can help identify resources/assistance for food, transportation, housing, laptops, hotspots, etc. Success coaches are available by appointment and drop-in.

LLCC grant funding has promoted a partnership between the LLCC Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Illinois.  The grant initiative aims to increase diversity of OTA student applications by increasing community awareness of the occupational therapy profession. This funding has supported development of a first-year OTA student service-learning project in collaboration with the Boys & Girls Clubs after school program located at Dubois Elementary School in Springfield. The project, “Healthy Minds, Hearts and Hands,” brings engaging activities promoting fitness, emotional well-being and social language development for building student confidence and success at school. Additionally, the program offers traditional school-based occupational therapy strategies to help students who struggle with homework to build skills that will carry over into the classroom.

Thank you to the LLCC Foundation; Dr. Cynthia Maskey, dean of health professions; Tiffany Mathis, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Illinois; Ms. Shamill Hill, Boys & Girls Clubs Site Director; and Hirut Harris, COTA/L, an LLCC OTA graduate and grant co-author, for making this service-learning project possible! The first session brought many smiles during Minion zumba, yoga, relaxation breathing and a craft activity called “Say Hello to Me.”

Renovation on the first floor of Menard Hall to begin

Over spring break, contractors will begin work on the first floor of Menard Hall to renovate the student services area including the eight adjacent classrooms. A construction barrier will be installed to isolate the construction area from the rest of the building. Anyone on campus will continue to have access through A Lincoln Commons to Menard Hall on the first floor. If entering Menard Hall from the east side of the building, the southern most entrance will only allow entry to the second floor via the stairs by the vending machines. The second entrance on the east side of Menard Hall will still allow both first and second floor access. We anticipate this barrier to be in place for the next 10 to 12 months. Signs will be posted alerting people to the construction area. Please use caution and follow all signs, caution tape, cones, barricades and barriers in this area. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Tim Ervin at 217-786-9605 or tim.ervin@llcc.edu.
