Summer Internship & Job Fair happens Wednesday

The Summer Internship & Job Fair will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon in A. Lincoln Commons. This event provides students with opportunities to explore summer internships and job opportunities.

Paul Simon Essay Contest offers $500 scholarship

LLCC students have an opportunity to win a $500 scholarship by participating in the Paul Simon Essay Contest. Please encourage students to enter by writing a 500-word essay on the topic “How My Community College Changed My Life.”

Deadline: 3 p.m., Friday, March 21

Entries will be judged on style, clarity and relevance with special emphasis on grammar and punctuation. Submissions must include the student’s name, address, phone number and email address. Students are encouraged to schedule appointments in the LLCC Writing Center to review essays before submission. Submissions must be emailed to the Writing Center by the deadline, writing.center@llcc.edu.

LLCC prizes:

  • First place: $75 gas card and prizes from the LLCC Bookstore. The winning essay will be entered into the statewide competition for the chance to win $500 toward educational expenses for the fall 2025 and an invitation to attend the Illinois Community College Association’s awards banquet in June.
  • Second place: $25 gas card and prizes from the LLCC Bookstore.
  • Third place: prizes from the LLCC Bookstore.

LLCC to host transfer fairs Feb. 24 and 25

The LLCC Office of Student Success will be hosting the State University Transfer Day (SUTD) on Monday, Feb. 24, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the Private Illinois Colleges and Universities (PICU) Transfer Fair on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Both events will be held in A. Lincoln Commons and are for current students looking to transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a bachelor’s degree. Please encourage your students in transfer majors to attend these events.

SUTD attendees include: Chicago State University, Eastern Illinois University, Governors State University, Illinois State University, Northern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville, University of Illinois – Chicago, University of Illinois – Springfield, University of Illinois – Urbana Champaign and Western Illinois University.

PICU attendees include: Bradley University, Columbia College – Chicago, DePaul University, Dominican University, Greenville University, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan University, Loyola University – Chicago, McKendree University, Methodist College, Millikin University, Monmouth College, National Louis University, North Park University, Olivet Nazarene University, Quincy University, St. Francis Medical Center – Nursing and St. John’s College of Nursing.

Lingo Bingo with Financial Aid. Monday, February 17, Menard Hall Atrium, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Financial Aid Awareness Month. Free hot cocoa and prizes.
Encourage students to put their financial aid knowledge to the test for a chance to win free prizes and enjoy a hot cocoa bar with tasty treats! LLCC Financial Aid staff will also be on hand to help students complete the 2025-26 FAFSA and review their financial aid.

Learn More about High Cholesterol During Heart Health Month

Did you know that nearly 2 in 5 adults in the U.S. have high cholesterol, according to the CDC? In week 3 of heart health month, we move to the topic of high cholesterol including what it is, the optimal cholesterol levels to achieve, and the myths and facts about cholesterol.
Here’s what you can look forward to this week:

  • Visit the health and wellness page for more information about high cholesterol and access links to resources.
  • Attend the Heart Safety Expo on Wednesday, Feb. 19 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to visit with local vendors, get a blood pressure check, see an AED demonstration, win prizes, and more!

Additional Facts and Stats about High Cholesterol

  • About 86 million US adults aged 20 or older have total cholesterol levels above 200 mg/dL. Nearly 25 million adults in the United States have total cholesterol levels above 240 mg/dL.
  • A cholesterol check, also known as a lipid panel or lipid profile, is a blood test that measures LDL (bad) cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, Triglycerides, and Total Cholesterol.
  • Lifestyle changes, such as choosing healthy heart fats (such as avocados and nuts) over saturated fats, staying active most days, and avoiding tobacco products can help manage cholesterol levels.
  • Adding fiber-rich foods, such as oats, fruits, and vegetables, can lower LDL cholesterol.
