ISAC financial aid training workshop Oct. 19

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission will be providing a free financial aid training workshop tomorrow for professionals in high schools, higher education and community-based organizations. The workshop will take place from 8 a.m.-noon in the Trutter Center.

Participants will learn about the most challenging areas of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). They will discuss federal and state aid eligibility, dependency, parental information and financial information.

Attendees will also learn about current financial aid concepts, tools and resources at the state and federal levels. By analyzing and discussing case-study scenarios, participants will have the opportunity to work with other professionals in the field in order to better understand the common issues and misconceptions that arise when assisting students in navigating the financial aid process.

Sojourn donation drive and “Take A Stand Tuesday”

Don’t forget to sign up to take a stand against domestic violence today in A. Lincoln Commons! Symbolic of our refusal to be passive bystanders of intimate partner violence in our community, we will have at least one person “taking a stand” in A. Lincoln Commons from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Participants can sign up for a time slot that fits your schedule here.

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a donation drive for Sojourn Shelter and Services will be held from now until the end of October. All donations will be delivered to Sojourn for use in their shelter for women and children affected by domestic violence. Sojourn’s “Wish List” can be found in the 2017 Domestic Violence Awareness Flier. All donations, including monetary donations, can be taken to the LLCC Student Life Office. Please join us for a Lincoln Land Review live reading event today, Oct. 17 from noon-2 p.m. in A. Lincoln Commons. Authors will share their work published in the 2017 edition of the Lincoln Land Review. Refreshments will be provided at a pre-reading reception.

Soup & Stories Oct. 17

LLCC Student Life is hosting Soups & Stories today from noon-2 p.m. in the R.H. Stephens Room. The event features Nelson Aguiar who will be sharing his Latino experience with participants.

The program is open to the LLCC community, but geared toward the development of students. If faculty and staff are interested in attending there is just a $3 charge for the lunch.

SURS Board announces vacant positions

SURS will hold a board election during April 2018 to fill three expiring trustee positions. All SURS members are encouraged to consider running for a trustee position.

Elected trustees serve six-year terms. The SURS Board of Trustees meets quarterly, with additional committee meetings scheduled throughout the year. Trustees are also required to meet certain annual ethics, legislative and fiduciary training as well as complete eight hours of educational conferences on investments and public pension administration.

Active member candidates are nominated by petitions in writing, signed by no less than 400 participants. Annuitant candidates are also nominated by petitions in writing, signed by no less than 100 annuitants. All candidates must also complete an application. Candidate packets and petition forms are available from SURS. Candidates should contact Kelly Carson at kcarson@surs.org for information. Completed petitions will be due to SURS on Jan. 31, 2018.

All eligible SURS members will receive a ballot along with candidate information prior to April 2, 2018. Members will be able to vote by returning a paper ballot in a postage-paid envelope, by phone or online.
