New online guide to walking paths through LLCC prairies

LLCC prairieToday is Campus Sustainability Day! The LLCC Sustainability Team is proud to announce a new online guide, called “A Walk Through the Prairies,” that outlines the walking paths around the LLCC campus prairies. It also describes the various plants walkers will encounter at various times of the year, and allows you to share your own prairie photos. The online guide will be unveiled today as part of Sustainability Day activities.

If you find a special painted rock along the walking path, you can win a prize from the Green Center! Stop by the Sustainability Team Green Center table in A. Lincoln Commons from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. today to get more details. They will also be demonstrating how to download and navigate the online guide.

The online guide was created by LLCC GIS student Megan Cantrall during a summer internship with LLCC Facilities. It is available on the LLCC website at www.llcc.edu/maps under “Springfield Campus Maps” for either desktop or mobile viewing. The LLCC Sustainability Team hopes you enjoy your walks through the prairies!

Other Campus Sustainability Activities:
In A. Lincoln Commons from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., you can also taste the inaugural honey harvested from campus bee hives, paint a kindness rock and watch “Death by Design,” a movie that brings to light what happens behind the scenes in the electronics industry (showtimes: 10 a.m., 11:20 am and 12:40 p.m.)

Open house Oct. 25 at new Levi, Ray and Shoup Aviation Center at LLCC

The public is invited to tour the new Levi, Ray and Shoup Aviation Center at Lincoln Land Community College, located at Springfield’s Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport, today, Oct. 25, from 4-5 p.m. A ribbon cutting is planned for 5:30 p.m.

LLCC aviation instructors and students will be on hand to guide visitors through the facility, made possible through a generous gift from Dick Levi, CEO of Levi, Ray and Shoup, Inc. The facility was constructed adjacent to the existing LLCC aviation center and provides expanded classroom and hands-on training spaces for LLCC’s aviation mechanics program.

Epicurean Club Halloween Treats Sale

The LLCC Epicurean Club is taking orders for Halloween treats! The club is selling decorated cookies, Oreo/Reese’s popcorn and chocolate dipped pretzel rods. Prices range from $2 to $5. Please submit Halloween Sale order forms and payments to the LLCC Student Life Office by Oct. 25.

Payment is due at the time of order submission. Please make checks payable to LLCC. All proceeds will be used to help the club further their knowledge of the culinary world.

Order pick-up will be available in A. Lincoln Commons Monday, Oct. 30 from 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

Fall film series “Through a Different Lens: Cultural Perspectives through Film” begins tomorrow

LLCC Arts and Humanities will host a free film and discussion series this fall entitled, “Through a Different Lens: Cultural Perspectives through Film.” The film series will be held on select Thursday evenings from 6-9 p.m. in the Trutter Center, hosted by Ashley Green, Ph.D., professor of English and Joseph Hoff, Ph.D., professor of Spanish.

The films included in the series are:

  • Oct. 26 – “Diarios de Motocicleta” (Motorcycle Diaries)
  • Nov. 16 – “Monkey King II”
  • Dec. 7 – “Romero!”

In addition, the Trutter Museum will be open until 6 p.m. on the Thursdays on which the films are shown. The museum will feature a display of cultural items from the country highlighted in the film that evening!

Fifth annual “Haunted Lab” Oct. 27

The LLCC Chemistry Club and LLCC Quiz Bowl Team are hosting the fifth annual “Haunted Lab” Friday, Oct. 27 from 5-6:30 p.m. Children ages five and older and their parents/guardians are invited to the free event. Pre-registration is required at www.llcc.edu/haunted-lab.

Haunted LabChildren will see “spooky” science demonstrations and learn about experiments they can do at home. Experiments will be conducted by club members under the guidance of Jennifer Ramm, LLCC professor of chemistry.

Science demonstration shows will run about 20 minutes and will take place in room 2215 on the upper level of Sangamon Hall. Shows begin every 30 minutes at 5, 5:30 and 6 p.m. While waiting for shows to begin, children can participate in hands-on activities and face painting across the hall in room 2216.

Children are welcome to wear Halloween costumes to the event. Chips and drinks will be available for purchase.

 

Obsolete furniture and equipment auction Oct. 28

LLCC will be hosting an auction this Saturday, Oct. 28, starting at 10 a.m. for obsolete furniture and equipment. Some of the items that will be included in the auction are filing cabinets, desk chairs, stackable chairs, desks, vans, weights, band saws and other miscellaneous items. The auction will take place on the far east parking lot close to the storage building.

Hablamos fundraiser at CherryBerry Oct. 28

The LLCC Hablamos Club is having a fundraiser at CherryBerry Frozen yogurt on Oct. 28. CherryBerry will donate 20 percent of all sales to the Hablamos Club. CherryBerry is located at 2671 Chatham Rd., Springfield. Please mention the LLCC Hablamos Club when purchasing the yogurt to ensure the club will receive the benefit. Monies raised will be used to help the club continue in its efforts to raise awareness of Latino culture on campus and in the community!

Dine & Develop program Tuesday, Oct. 24

LLCC Student Life is hosting a Dine & Develop program tomorrow from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the R. H. Stephens Room. The event features Adam Kirk Smith who is the author of “The Bravest You: Five Steps to Fight Your Biggest Fears, Find Your Passion and Unlock Your Extraordinary Life.”

The program is open to the LLCC community, but geared toward the development of students. If faculty and staff are interested in attending there is just a $3 charge for the lunch.
