BSU supports East Side Pride’s 11th Annual Coat Drive

Help the LLCC Black Student Union collect clean, slightly used or new coats to be donated to local public schools and shelters for the 11th Annual Coat Drive sponsored by Eastside Pride. Welcome Kathy Wanless!

Kathy WanlessKathy Wanless recently joined LLCC as our education field experience coordinator. She retired in June from Springfield Public Schools District 186 after 35 years as an educator. For the past 10 years, she was principal of Owen Marsh Elementary School. Kathy earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in educational administration from Illinois State University. She can be reached at 786-4939 or kathy.wanless@llcc.edu.

LLCC honored with 2017 Illinois Sustainability Award

Dr. Judy JozaitisLLCC has been named one of 22 organizations across the state to win a 2017 Illinois Sustainability Award. From global corporations to small specialized businesses, the Illinois Sustainability Awards recognize significant achievements toward keeping the state’s economy green and going strong. LLCC was recognized for its commitment to sustainable campus operations. Dr. Judy Jozaitis, LLCC vice president of workforce development and community education accepted the award at a Chicago ceremony hosted by the Illinois Sustainability Technology Center – Prairie Research Institute.

Energy efficient upgrades to LLCC campus facilities have included installing roof top solar panels (also used for educational purposes), replacing aged boilers and chillers with high efficiency units, replacing constant volume air handlers with variable air volume handlers, replacing windows with energy efficient models and installing energy management systems.

The college adopted the use of 26 green cleaning products and switched all vending machines to Energy Star compliant models. The college paper reduction project has reduced paper usage across the campus by an average of 13 percent. Communal garden space has grown to 42 garden beds, two bee hives and two high tunnel greenhouses used to raise vegetables throughout the year.

In addition, 15 acres of native prairie landscapes at LLCC replaced high maintenance grass and created habitats for native wildlife. The native plant species added to the grounds provide learning opportunities for biology and environmental students. Establishing the prairies saved money, time and an estimated 200 gallons of gas, formerly used for mowing, annually.

LLCC’s “Haunted Lab” attracts budding scientists

The fifth annual “Haunted Lab,” sponsored this year by the LLCC Chemistry Club and LLCC Quiz Bowl Team, was another success, with at least 130 attendees and lots of “oohs” and “ahhs” expressed. LLCC students, under the direction of chemistry professors Dr. Michael Ramm and Jennifer Ramm, demonstrated scary science experiments and even did a bit of ghost hunting.

ZipGrade is a technology that utilizes the computer and the camera on your cell phone to make grading and analysis a breeze. We’ll learn how to set up a ZipGrade course, grade exams, identify problem questions through item analysis, quickly re-grade if an item was miskeyed or tossed and disseminate grades to Blackboard and students. BSU open mic night Oct. 31

The LLCC Black Student Union is hosting an open mic night today, Oct. 31 in A. Lincoln Commons from 5-7:30 p.m. Open mic night is a social event sponsored by the BSU where LLCC students and staff have a platform to openly express their voice and talents through poetry, singing, dance, instrumental solos and spoken word. Culinary-focused trip to Italy

Culinary trip to ItalyLLCC Culinary Arts is planning a two-week, culinary-focused trip to Italy May 27-June 10, 2018, which is open to students and the community. Tomorrow, Nov. 1, is the deadline to make the deposit that secures plane ticket costs. The trip, in conjunction with Centro Studi Italiani in Urbania, Italy, will travel to three areas: the Marche region, nestled between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea; the food valley area of Modena and Parma, located in the Emilia-Romagna region and known for prosciutto, balsamic vinegar and Parmesan cheese; and finally the city of Rome, the capital of Italy.

While there, various classes will be held in Italian language, culture and culinary heritage and tradition of Italy. This culinary immersion will also include meeting with culinary experts, local wine and food producers, restaurant owners and culinary entrepreneurs. Excursions to destinations with high artistic interest and natural beauty around Italy will provide a well-rounded perspective of Italian life and culture.
