Register for Jan. 28 Inclusivity Series presentation

LLCC Inclusivity Speaker Series. Diversity, Inclusion, Identity, Community. The second speaker in the Inclusivity Series, Dr. Stephen John Quaye, will be facilitating sessions on intergroup dialogue one week from today — on Jan. 28 — in the Robert H. Stephens Room. The event will also be available via livestream. The sessions for faculty and staff include:

  • Noon-1 p.m. – Keynote presentation
  • 1-1:45 p.m. – Facilitated workshop

Registration for the event (whether attending in person or via livestream) is requested. It is co-sponsored by the Campus Climate Team’s Safety and Inclusivity Workgroup, Student Life and TRIO.

Dr. Stephen John Quaye

In this presentation, participants will learn different terminology (e.g., privilege, power, oppression, intersectionality). In the workshop following the presentation, participants will learn dialogic skills for enabling them to engage in healthier cross-racial dialogues.

Dr. Quaye is associate professor in the higher education and student affairs program at Ohio State University and an associate editor of the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education. Quaye focuses on understanding how students can engage difficult dialogues honestly and productively, as well as how storytelling is used as an educational tool to foster reflection and learning across differences. He also is interested in the strategies educators use to facilitate these dialogues and what they learn about themselves in the process.

Midyear progress update form

In an effort to gather progress information for the current fiscal year’s Planning & Budgeting Projects, a simple Midyear Progress Update form has been created for your completion. This will serve as an update on current FY20 Planning & Budgeting Projects. If you submitted a project request during the FY20 Planning & Budgeting Process, you will be required to submit midyear progress update information for approved projects. View updated FY20 Planning & Budgeting documents. Budget Maintenance requests are excluded from this process.

Please access the SharePoint form and provide progress information for each of your FY20 projects. The form is filtered to display the project id numbers that you will need to respond to. Select a project id number, provide the necessary information, include supporting documents as attachments and submit the form. As each project id is completed, it will be removed from the drop down list on the SharePoint form.

All submitted forms will be routed directly to your VP/cabinet-level supervisor for review.

Your responses should include specific evidence to support your project progress. If you have questions about what type of specific support, please contact Karie Longhta.

If you have any problems with accessing the SharePoint page, contact Megan McCann.

The updates should be submitted no later than noon on Friday, Jan. 31.

Meditation and writing practice, starting Jan. 25

Faculty, staff and students are invited to join us for meditation and writing practice every other Saturday morning, starting Jan. 25, from approximately 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the library conference room located in the northwest corner of the main floor of our LLCC Library. Whether you want to journal or begin essays, short stories or poetry — the practice of meditation combined with free writing is a great way to begin, continue or invigorate your current writing practice. If interested, please bring a notebook and pen or tablet/laptop and any writing prompts you might want to use with the group.
Three of us met the first morning. We liked the following format, but we are also open to adapting and changing:
  1. Short, unguided meditation time
  2. Free write without a prompt
  3. Sharing what we wrote
As we build our writing practices, we may want to share writing via email, between meetings. Keep in mind this is optional. Some may just want to write when we get together and leave it at that.
We have also talked about mixing up the style and types of meditation. If you aren’t familiar with writing/meditating practice together,  you might want to check out “Writing Down the Bones” by Natalie Goldberg. (A copy is available in the LLCC Library).
We are hoping to share this practice with more of the campus community. Please forward to folks you know — students, staff and faculty included — who you think may be interested, and let either of us know if you have questions, concerns or suggestions. Hope to see you on Jan. 25 at 11 a.m.
John Paul Jaramillo and Dr. Deborah Brothers, professors of English

LLCC Alert test today, 11:30 a.m.

Each semester, LLCC tests its emergency alert system called LLCC ALERT. LLCC ALERT allows the college to communicate with you by text, phone and email in an emergency, as well as for severe weather and other closures. Current employees and students are automatically enrolled in LLCC ALERT.

The next test will take place today, Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020, at approximately 11:30 a.m. You will receive a test message from LLCC ALERT.

We encourage you to visit www.llcc.edu/alert and log in with your LLCC username and password to check your current contact information and manage how you receive emergency notifications. LLCC ALERT uses the information about you currently stored in the college’s Colleague system, and this information may need updating. Please add your office phone number if it is not listed, and make any other revisions needed.

For assistance, please contact the IT Service Desk at 786-2555 or helpdesk@llcc.edu.

Note: Updating your contact information in LLCC ALERT will NOT update that information in Colleague. To update your information in Colleague, please contact LLCC Human Resources.
