Important information regarding fraudulent unemployment claims

To all LLCC employees,

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), there is a large-scale scam going on that involves individuals filing claims for unemployment benefits, using names and personal information of people who have not lost their jobs. As you may have heard on the news, the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) has identified an increase in fraudulent, or imposter, unemployment claims in recent months. We feel that it is important for our employees to have awareness that these false claims are rampant, not just in Illinois, but across the country.

When IDES receives an unemployment benefit application for a person employed or previously employed by Lincoln Land Community College, Human Resources is notified, via a secure portal. We will research to obtain the employment status of the employee and update IDES with the findings. In recent months, we have been notified of a small number of active LLCC employees with claims in the IDES unemployment system. These employees are actively employed and did not initiate any process with IDES. We reported those findings to IDES and notified the affected employees regarding the fraudulent claim.

You may be a victim of unemployment fraud if you have not filed an unemployment claim but you have received a debit card or an unemployment insurance (UI) finding letter. It is important that you take immediate action. DO NOT ACTIVATE THE DEBIT CARD. Steps and resources can be found at Reporting Unemployment Insurance Fraud – IDES. In addition to the steps listed on the IDES website, please alert Kim Elder (kim.elder@llcc.edu) in Human Resources and your local police department.

This is a nation-wide scam. At this time, there is no evidence that the fraudulent unemployment claims filed for our employees is in any way related to a breach of information, data or security at, or with, Lincoln Land Community College.

If you are a victim of identity theft, there are resources available to you. Through the FTC, Identity Theft Recovery Steps | IdentityTheft.gov will give you the opportunity to report identity theft to the FTC and get step-by-step recovery help. IdentityTheft.gov will guide you through placing a free, one-year fraud alert on your credit, getting their free credit reports, closing fraudulent accounts opened in your name, adding a free extended fraud alert or credit freeze to your account and more. Benefit-eligible employees may also receive assistance through the Employee Assistance Program. Please visit the HR Portal Page for contact information.

Please share this information with your student employees or any faculty and staff that may not have seen this!

If you have any questions, please contact Nicole Ralph (nicole.ralph@llcc.edu).

Do your part #Be CyberSmart – Compromised account

What should you do if you think that your LLCC account has a security breach?

If there is any question about a breach, immediately change your LLCC password (via Outlook web/Office 365) and notify the IT Helpdesk at 217-786-2555 or helpme@llcc.edu.

If the computer has any personal online account passwords stored, it is recommended that you change these passwords immediately, as well as check with any financial institutions for issues.

When should I change my passwords?

It is imperative that you immediately change your passwords any time you feel that you may have been subject to a phishing or ransomware attack with LLCC or personal accounts.

Make sure to create new passwords that are not easily guessed, different than the last password and enable two-factor authentication (security questions, phone call or text for access, etc.) whenever possible.

What are some signs that one of my online accounts may have been hacked?

There are posts you never made on your social network page or personal messages sent via Messenger, etc.

  • Posts may encourage your friends to click on a link or download an app.

A friend, family member or colleague reports getting email from you that you never sent.

Your information was lost via a data breach, malware infection or lost/stolen device.

If you believe a personal account has been compromised, take the following steps:

Notify all of your contacts that they may receive spam messages appearing to come from your account.

  • Tell your contacts they shouldn’t open messages or click on any links from your account and warn them about the potential for malware.

If you believe your computer is infected, be sure your security software is up to date, and scan your system for malware. You can also use other scanners and removal tools.

Change passphrases to all accounts that have been compromised and other key accounts as soon as possible.

  • A strong passphrase is a sentence that is at least 12 characters long.
  • Focus on positive sentences or phrases that you like to think about and are easy to remember (for example, “I love country music.”). On many sites, you can even use spaces!

If you cannot access your account because a passphrase has been changed, contact the service provider immediately and follow any steps the provider offers for recovering an account.

Message from President Charlotte Warren

Dear LLCC Faculty and Staff,

Monday, Oct. 26, kicks off our two-week, 2020 United Way campaign to help local people live their best possible lives. Thanks to your support, United Way strengthens our entire community, especially in light of the hardships many are facing due to the pandemic. Your support for United Way allows local people to receive emergency assistance, job training, senior care, early childhood education and much more. Your gift stays right here in our local community.

To donate through a one-time gift or payroll deduction, please click here. Why give? Four of your LLCC colleagues who serve on the United Way committee created this brief video, in which they describe why they give every year to United Way.

As a thank-you for giving, you’ll receive a free jeans day sticker (with no expiration date), and your name will be put in a drawing for multiple gift cards donated by the United Way committee.

Thank you for being an everyday hero and lifting up our community.
