Update on campus construction projects

We’d like to update you all on the projects around campus. The wet spring and early summer have obviously affected many of our projects. However, the roof replacement on Montgomery Hall has been completed and the masonry repair project is moving along nicely, albeit a week and a half behind. Our best efforts are to be out of the front of the buildings by the end of next week. We plan to finish the project on the east side of Menard.

We’ll begin work on the replacement of the Workforce Careers Center entry slabs today, to correct the deficiencies that caused the slabs to heave this past winter. We also have begun mobilizing for the removal of the exterior concrete stairs on the west side of Sangamon Hall. These will be replaced by metal stairs with open grated treads, safer and cleaner than the old stairs.

At the end of the month we will begin replacing the concrete in the “breezeway” between Sangamon Hall and Sangamon South. We will have that completed prior to start of classes.

The sidewalk lighting project will also be completed by then and we will soon bid a project that provides an accessible route to the Helen Hamilton area on the west side of Sangamon Hall.

Next week we begin two projects on and off campus. The parking lot at the Capital City Training Center will be repaired, resealed and striped and the north section of the Truck Driver Training lot will be removed, supplied with a de-watering system and replaced.

Finally, this fall we will replace the septic system at the Child Development Center.

We very much appreciate your patience and understanding while we continue to improve our facilities and environment. As always, please feel free to call with any questions or suggestions.

Thank you,
Hugh Garvey

Important information regarding LLCC’s FY ’16 budget

As all of you know these are challenging financial times.  The finance office and the cabinet have been working diligently to reduce our operating costs along with addressing the challenge of maintaining quality.  We have tried to anticipate the myriad of challenges we will likely be facing while being ever mindful that every change ripples through to all areas of the college.  Given that, the 2016 Tentative Budget is now available in Colleague and will be placed on public display at the July Board Meeting. A Campus Budget Workshop will be held in the 1st quarter of this fiscal year. A notice will be sent out later regarding when and where this will take place. A balanced budget was presented as required by the LLCC Board of Trustees. This was a very difficult process due to proposed property tax freeze by the legislature, continued reductions in state funding, and declining enrollments.

Some things to know about this year’s budget:

·     FY16 budget includes Board approved increases in salary and benefits. HR will send notification to staff regarding current approved salary increases.

·     Many budget line items in all areas of the college were reduced to be in line with the three year spending pattern for the line items.

·     These reductions include all Materials and Supplies accounts (54X) being reduced by 5%.  Please watch your supply budgets accordingly.

·     Approved Budget Maintenance and Planning Strategies with funding are included in the budget and available in Colleague.

·     Approved FFE, Small Projects, Perkins, and Tech Fee appropriations will be sent out or posted when available.

·     Additional adjustments may be necessary between now and the adoption of the Final Budget at the September Board Meeting.

·     Budget transfers will not be processed until the final budget is approved by the Board and those adjustments are made in Colleague. HOWEVER, if you do not have the necessary funds in your lines to process a payment or PO, a budget transfer MUST still be prepared and submitted to the Budget office. Once the transfer is received and reviewed, we will override the account and will process the transfer once the final budget is online.

These changes mean there has to be even more accountability at every budget management level.  It is imperative that departments review their budgets during the year as purchases are made to ensure you are operating within your budget. Directions on running Colleague general ledger reports (ACBL, GLBR, and GLBS) are located in the “Useful Information” section on the budget office portal page found here.  Please familiarize yourself with these reports as they will help tremendously in managing your budget appropriately. If you have any questions or problems, please feel free to contact the Finance Department.

Five Secrets to Spectacular Student Engagement

Are you looking for a way to effectively use technology in your classroom? Even the best teachers struggle to keep the attention of distracted students browsing their email and newsfeeds during class. Dr. Colin Montpetit boosted participation by 49 percent after introducing a student engagement solution into his large enrollment course. Using the cloud-based system, Dr. Montpetit is able to achieve a 99 percent participation rate by easily adding diverse question formats into his presentations. Students in turn participate anonymously using their own laptops, tables, and smartphones that enables them to learn “fearlessly.” This new approach helps Dr. Montpetit transform his class into an “active learning zone” while increasing engagement, defeating in-class device distractions, and most importantly, improving learning outcomes. Uncover Dr. Montpetit’s five secrets to spectacular student engagement and put them to the test in your own classroom!
