Facilities Services is testing the fire sprinkler system at the Workforce Careers Center this Thursday, Aug. 20. During testing it will be necessary to sound the fire alarm system. Disruptions will be kept to a minimum.
Road construction on I-55 begins Aug. 24
There will be lane closures on I-55 from mile post 89 (one mile south of Toronto Road) to mile post 77 (approx. 5 miles north of the Farmersville exit) for a resurfacing project beginning Aug. 24. The project is anticipated to run until Oct. 9.
Also, the Union Pacific RR Crossing on IL Route 29 will be closed from Aug. 24-Oct. 24, for the high speed rail project.
Michelle Coakes has artwork accepted into juried exhibit
Michelle Coakes, art professor, had two
pieces accepted into the “River2River Ceramics Exhibit” at the Ceramics Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It is a juried regional exhibit open to anyone residing in any states bordering Iowa (Blue Skinned Basket and Large Threaded Oil Can). In addition, she entered the Tall Teapot with Scribbles in the Professional Exhibit at the State Fair.
WQLZ Ticket Stop and Open House tonight
LLCC’s Workforce Careers Center will be a “WQLZ Ticket Stop” tonight from 4-6 p.m. for the upcoming Godsmack/Sevendust rock concert in Springfield. WQLZ is broadcasting live and providing giveaways. Anyone who comes will be eligible to win tickets to the Sept. 27 concert at the Prairie Capital Convention Center. (Sorry, LLCC employees are not eligible to win the tickets, but you are welcome to stop by!)
In addition, there is an Open House scheduled during that time, with tours of the Workforce Careers Center and faculty/staff on hand to answer questions about enrolling in classes.

LLCC’s Nancy Sweet judges food competition at State Fair
Nancy Sweet, director, culinary arts and operations, was one of eight judges at the State Fair’s second annual SJ-R Golden Abe awards. Smoke Stack BBQ’s “Pulled Pork Parfait” was the winner after the eight judges deemed it the best among 20-plus entries Thursday, Aug. 13. Read “Pulled Pork Parfait.”
In addition, Nancy did a demonstration Saturday at the State Fair in the Hobbies, Arts and Crafts building. She demonstrated Scallops with Succotash and Citrus Vinaigrette.
WQLZ Ticket Stop/Open House Monday, 4-6 p.m., in Workforce Careers Center
