November is Military Family Month; Nov. 11 is Veterans Day

Greetings from LLCC Student Success! November is Military Family Month. During the month of November, we recognize the commitment and sacrifice families make in support of their service members. We thank our service members and their families for their dedication and support to our country during these unprecedented times.

Re-integration to civilian life can be a difficult process for many service members and their families. We want to remind faculty and staff that for LLCC students that are re-integrating as veterans, we offer support including, but not limited to:

  • Talkspace – LLCC’s tele-mental health provider.
  • Success Coaches – meet with our veteran students to discuss accessing campus and community support.
  • Career Services – help veterans to complete a career assessment and/or resume as well as job search support.
  • Financial Aid – Dawn Burch, our certifying official, can help veterans navigate how to apply for benefits.
  • Veterans Club – student club for veterans and those supporting veterans.

We encourage you to support our veterans by referring them to these resources for support as well as learning more about supporting veterans in the classroom. A great resource is: https://veterans.columbia.edu/. (Check out the video library.)

If you would like more information about how to support our veteran students, visit www.llcc.edu/veterans-services or reach out to Claire Heffron-McKinney.

Thank you for all that you do for LLCC students!

New Student Orientation is now optional

New Student Orientation is no longer required but instead encouraged for new students. The college also welcomes transfer, returning students, family members and those supporting new students to attend the orientation. It helps students set the course for their educational journey and is available online or in person.

The mission of New Student Orientation is to provide new students with personal, educational and social support as they transition and navigate the college’s expectations, resources and environment. It provides an opportunity to get to know other students, LLCC staff and the campus. Students learn about the college’s academic support services that are designed to help them succeed in their classes. Orientation also teaches students about the technology they’ll use inside and outside of the classroom to help them reach their goals.

Calling all first-generation faculty and staff

The week of Nov. 7 is First Generation Student Week. LLCC TRIO would like to recognize our first-gen staff and faculty for their accomplishments and indicate this to students and colleagues with a sign on office doors/desks.

Keep an eye on the LincIn for more information about events that week.

If you identify as a first-generation college student — primary parent(s)/guardian(s) did not graduate with a four-year college degree, please email TRIO@llcc.edu.

Connecting students with support

Greetings from LLCC Student Success!

We hope that your fall semester is going well. We wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that if you encounter a student needing support services such as tele-mental health, information on food or housing support, please have them connect with their assigned student success coach. Their success coach will work with them to refer to services, either on- or off-campus. If you or the student is unsure about who their assigned success coach is, faculty can view their students’ success coaches via the course roster in Logger Central, or you/the student can reach out to the office at success@llcc.edu, via text at 217-441-2415 or phone at 217-786-2224.

Our Student Well-Being webpage has a lot of support information that students can access, as well as faculty and staff.

Also, Nikki Baker, compliance and prevention coordinator shared a great compliance resources tool for faculty and staff to help support students and find information quickly.

If you encounter anyone in immediate danger of harming themselves or others, please call the LLCC Police emergency number at 217-786-2222.

Thank you for all that you do for LLCC students!

Officials of LLCC signed an agreement last week with the Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault (PCASA) to provide confidential advisors to any students in need of these services. Per state statute, all Illinois colleges and universities are required to have confidential advisors and other resources in place.

PCASA will offer confidential support for any student who has ever experienced sexual misconduct, domestic or dating violence or stalking. Confidential advisors will assist students with information on reporting to law enforcement agencies, seeking emergency medical treatment, campus and community support services while protecting the student’s privacy and rights under the law.

Shelley Vaughan, associate director for prevention and outreach at PCASA, commented, “We are pleased to partner with LLCC in this endeavor and continue our longstanding partnership to offer our services and support to LLCC students.”

“I want to extend my thanks to Ms. Vaughn and our colleagues at PCASA for making this agreement possible,” said Kelli Sinclair, LLCC vice president of student services. “Our partnerships and relationships with local community agencies like PCASA are integral to our success at LLCC. In this case, PCASA’s ability to serve in the ‘confidential advisor’ capacity at LLCC helps us keep the safe and healthy learning environment we have for students. We are grateful for their expertise and support.”

All services to students provided by PCASA will be within the guidelines of the Preventing Sexual Violence in Higher Education Act. Students seeking more information may contact Nikki Baker, LLCC compliance and prevention coordinator, at 217-786-3426 or nikki.baker@llcc.edu.

September is Suicide Awareness Month

September is the time that community agencies, colleges and universities, and hotlines  work together to increase awareness about suicide and suicide prevention.

The LLCC Office of Student Success encourages you to learn more about suicide and suicide prevention and/or share information with your students.

September 2022 Suicide Awareness Month information:

If you, a student, friend or family member is struggling, please know there is support available. Anyone can call or text the new Suicide Prevention hotline at 988. View more information about 988. Get information about the protocol for students in crisis.

If you encounter a student who is struggling emotionally, please encourage them to use Talkspace, the tele-mental health service that LLCC partners with for mental health and wellness. Students were sent the information in a text and email the first week of classes, and there is also a Canvas announcement. As always, please encourage students to connect with their student success coach to provide support and/or resources.

If you are needing support as an employee, please remember that LLCC offers an Employee Assistive Program, EAP.

Thank you for all that you do for LLCC students!

Sign up to participate in Early Alert

LLCC Student Success is continuing to grow participation in Early Alert, which was rebooted during the fall 2021 semester. Last academic year, we had approximately 25 faculty participate and would like to continue to increase participation.

In short, Early Alert is when faculty send out an alert (flag) or kudos for a student either doing well in their course or not so well. Your participation means that you would complete three campaign surveys about students in your courses for the regular term (and one campaign during eight-week courses if you happen to teach those). During the campaign, you can indicate any concerns or kudos you have for each student, then the success coach and student will receive an email. Once the success coach receives the notification, they will reach out to the student to discuss. They can make notes and then eventually close the flag (or kudo), and you will be able to see the notes made by the success coach. This ensures that we can work with students if they need additional support (or congratulate them for their hard work), that the success coach reinforces any messaging from faculty, and that communication and collaboration are enhanced.

If you wish to take part, please complete this Early Alert Participation Form by Sept. 1. After signing up, be on the lookout for information about upcoming training sessions.

If you have any questions, please email Alex Berry at alex.berry@llcc.edu.
