Writing Center welcomes visitors during last week of October

Students, faculty and staff are cordially invited to the LLCC Writing Center during the last week in October (Oct. 29-Nov. 2) to help celebrate the National Day on Writing. Come take a selfie with Edgar Allan Poe, who will be haunting the Writing Center with his pet raven; peruse the stack of free books, many of which have been donated by Land of Lincoln Bookshare; and pick up a Writing Center bookmark that you can customize with your own favorite quotes and motivations for writing. We look forward to seeing you!

In the community – John Paul Jaramillo

Latino Author Spotlight featuring Amy Sayre Baptista and John Paul JaramilloTwo Illinois authors, John Paul Jaramillo, LLCC professor of English, and Amy Sayre Baptista will be featured at the Latino Author Spotlight on Monday, 6-8 p.m. at Maeva’s Coffee, 1320 Milton Road, Alton. Free drip coffee will be provided for guests of this author meet-and-greet.

John Paul Jaramillo, author of “The House of Order” and “Little Mocos,” was named International Latino Book Award Finalist for both of his story collections. Named in the “Top 10 New Latino Authors to Read” by Latino Boom, his works are a profound narrative of the Latino community. Jaramillo will be sharing a reading from his most recent short story collection, “Little Mocos” and will be available after for Q&A.

Amy Sayre Baptista’s work has appeared in countless publications. She has been awarded a SAFTA fellowship, a CantoMundo Poetry Fellowship and a scholarship to participate at the Disquiet Literary Festival in Lisbon, Portgual. Her work is written both in English and Portuguese and often explores the nature of immigration and immigrant communities. Baptista will be sharing work from her September 2018 release “Primitivity” and will be available for Q&A following.

LLCC Epicurean Club’s Halloween sale

The LLCC Epicurean Club is taking orders for its Halloween sale! Decorated cookies, Oreo and Reese’s popcorn, and chocolate dipped pretzels will be made and sold to help raise money for upcoming club events.

Please turn in order forms and money into LLCC Student Life by the end of the week. Printed order forms can be found in Student Life office. Money is due at time of order.

Orders can be picked up from A. Lincoln Commons on Tuesday Oct. 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Second wellbeing assessment and flu shot clinic tomorrow

A second onsite Wellbeing Assessment and Flu Shot Clinic will be offered tomorrow, Oct. 25, from 7:30-9 a.m. in the Trutter Center. If you missed last week’s event, here is your second chance! This event is open to all LLCC benefit-eligible employees and their spouses. For those employees and their spouses who are enrolled in a LLCC health insurance plan, the wellness screening and (and flu shot for those participating in the screening) is free! All benefit-eligible employees who participate in the wellness screening will receive a $50 Visa gift card – just for participating!

To register for the onsite wellness screening and/or flu shot, open the Onsite Screening Guide (attached in email from Oct. 19) for login/registration instructions.  Please note that there is a separate registration for the wellness screening and the flu shot.  If you would like to do both, please be sure to register for both.

LLCC Choir performs lunchtime concert today

The LLCC Choir will perform in concert today, Oct. 24, from 12:15-12:50 p.m. in A. Lincoln Commons.

The program will include a variety of choral pieces, including a holiday Pentatonix arrangement, selections from the movie “The Greatest Showman” and Walt Disney films, a choral masterpiece from Mozart arranged by John Rutter as well as popular American folk songs.

LLCC Dance Club coffee, cider and cocoa sale

The LLCC Dance Club: Express Your Seoul will be holding a coffee, cider and cocoa sale today, Oct. 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in A. Lincoln Commons. The sale features a variety of creamers, including the fall favorite, pumpkin spice, along with cider, hot chocolate and all the toppings you can think of! Snacks, including donuts (glazed, chocolate, powdered and pumpkin), granola bars, candy corn and trail mix, will also be available for purchase.

Lincoln Land Review live reading today, 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Please join us for our third annual Lincoln Land Review live reading, Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in A. Lincoln Commons. Contributors to the 2018 edition of the Lincoln Land Review will be reading excerpts from their work. Refreshments will be served.

Dr. Carmen Allen presents at Northern Illinois Regional P-20 Network fall symposium

Dr. Carmen Allen, interim dean of business and computer technologies, recently presented at the Northern Illinois Regional P-20 Network fall symposium. She was part of the panel discussion, “P-20 Considerations in Designing and Implementing Competency-Based Education.” Insights were shared about LLCC’s development of the CBE Cyber-Security certificate. Specific issues included the benefits to students, the benefits to the community, our institutional commitment and the inclusion of essential stakeholders for success. The goal of the Illinois P-20 Council is to increase the proportion of adults in Illinois with high quality degrees and credentials to 60 percent by 2025.
