Join the LLCC team to help at Girls on the Run!

As part of the 50 Acts of Service in conjunction with the college’s 50th Anniversary, LLCC is putting together a WATER STOP team to volunteer at the Girls on the Run 5K. All staff and faculty are welcome to participate. Please sign up by Oct. 27! If you would like to join the volunteer team or if you have any questions, email Laurel.Bretz@llcc.edu.

Date: Saturday, November 5, 2016
Time: 9:30a.m.-noon
Location: Lincoln Land Community College

Volunteer Role Description:

  • The Water Stop Team will meet at the Volunteer Check-In Tent and walk out to the corner of Shepherd Road and West Lake Shore Drive. There are two water stops, with two tables each, directly across the road from each other.
  • As volunteers arrive, begin filling cups. There will be water barrels and pitchers to help fill the cups. Volunteers will need to fill two levels of cups on each table (use Styrofoam boards to separate) to handle the rush of runners that will arrive. Supplies include tables, water barrels, pitchers, cups, Styrofoam boards, trash bags and rakes.
  • As you operate the water stop, some volunteers should continually be filling cups while the majority of people line the road and hand out water.
  • You do not need to fill the cups all the way up – they should be filled about half-way or even less. This is proper race etiquette so that participants will keep running/walking and to ensure there is plenty of water for all participants.
  • Cheer the participants on and have fun!
  • After the final race sweeper and/or SportsCare follow car comes through (indicating no other runners/walkers remain on the course) the team can clean up the area by raking up all used paper cups and putting in garbage bags. Move the water stop tables, trash cans, and supplies off of the side of the road, clearing the area for traffic. The supplies will be picked up by the truck after the race.
  • Be on the lookout for girls – or community runners – who may need assistance. There will be additional First Aid volunteers stationed at the Water Stop.

Thank you from SAVE Task Force

SAVE Task Force would like to thank everyone who participated in Domestic Violence Awareness Week of Action events. In a symbolic display of our refusal to accept domestic violence in our society, 104 students, staff, and faculty members participated in “Take a Stand Tuesday.” Throughout the week, 97 LLCC community members pledged to use their education, experiences, and voices to be active in the fight against all forms of sexual violence, including domestic and intimate partner violence. Jeans Day raised $175, which the Feminist Activist Coalition will donate to Sojourn Shelter and Services, a local domestic violence shelter and service agency. Through the stories and pledges shared by participants, it is now clearer than ever that we are a community of engaged and thoughtful citizens, activists, survivors, and supporters.

If you have not yet taken the pledge and wish to do so, we encourage you to download the pledge here and return it to Shelby Bedford in Menard 1143 (across from Admission & Registration).

Special thanks to those who signed up to take a stand throughout the day, ensuring someone was representing the movement at all times during the day on Tuesday:

LLCC’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA), Feminist Activist Coalition (FAC) and Psychology Club are hosting the Zombie Prom Oct. 28, 6-9 p.m. in the Student Union, Menard Hall. The public is invited, ages 18 and over welcome to attend.

What is the Zombie Prom, you may be asking yourself? Zombie Prom is an inclusive alternative dance for both LGBTQ+ and heterosexual persons.  The event will feature socializing, dancing, a photo booth and refreshments, along with special guest Empefive (a local dance group) and live music from HISO radio’s very own DJ Yinka! Attire for the event is “costume homecoming,” dress-up, wear a costume, or whatever makes you comfortable. Several artistic student volunteers will also be on hand to help“zombify” attendees.

Entry fee is $3.00 per person or $5.00 for couples. Attendees also have the option to donate five items of nonperishable goods, eight for couples, in lieu of entry fee. All nonperishable donations will be donated to LLCC’s food pantry.
