LLCC offering free Media Makers Camp
LLCC will host a Media Makers Camp for high school and recently graduated students who are interested in an inside-look at the field of integrated media design. The free camp will run July 22-25 at the LLCC-Medical District, 130 W. Mason St., Springfield. Morning (9 a.m.-noon) and afternoon (1-4 p.m.) sessions of the camp will be offered.
Over the course of four days, participants will get to explore the areas of 2D and 3D animation as well as video game design. The sessions will be led by Matthew Shaver, LLCC professor of integrated media design.
In the community
The LLCC Respiratory Care, Neurodiagnostic Technology and Radiography programs participated in the HSHS Careers Boot Camp on June 26. Area high school students participated in a one-day boot camp to help them explore careers in health care. The participants shadowed different areas of St. John’s Hospital, and various colleges and universities provided information at their vendor booths.

Congratulations to the entire LLCC Radiography class of 2024 on passing their national registry and certification exam! They have earned the right to be registered radiologic technologists!
Spring 2024 bird banding highlights

Below are the highlights of the spring 2024 banding season at the LLCC Bird Banding Station. This was our 23rd banding season (11th spring season) since the station’s inception (fall 2012).
- We banded 877 birds of 66 species over 31.5 banding days. This translates into 28.2 birds banded per day.
- We also had 197 repeat captures (birds banded earlier during the spring 2024 season) and 67 return captures (birds banded during a previous season).
- Two of the more interesting recaptures were a House Sparrow that was originally banded in fall 2016 and a Northern Cardinal and Red-winged Blackbird, which were both originally banded in 2017.
- Our highest one-day total was 87 birds banded on March 18.
- The top five species banded (by abundance) for the season were as follows – species (# banded): Dark-eyed (Slate-colored) Junco (282), Swamp Sparrow (64), Gray Catbird (55), Swainson’s Thrush (54) and White-throated Sparrow (46).
- The cumulative total number of birds banded (over 23 seasons) at the LLCC BBS is 36,927 birds of 135 species.
- We continue to host many volunteers and guests, including a number of LLCC biology classes, UIS graduate students and employees from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Illinois Natural History Survey.
- Our fall banding operations are scheduled to begin Aug. 14, 2024.
All banding, marking and sampling is being conducted under a federal Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey’s BBL.

“Make, Bake and Donate” culinary camp
Chef Kim Carter led the “Make, Bake and Donate” culinary camp last week. Participants in the camp prepared a variety of baked goods, including made-from-scratch dog treats, breads and cupcakes. Then, the students shared the love by donating some of the baked goods made in class — 800 frozen and baked dog treats, mover than 200 cookies, eight loaves of honey wheat bread, 100 buttermilk dinner rolls and 55 cupcakes — to local charities and animal shelters.
