Thank you from Dr. Cynthia Maskey

As I return to work today, I would like to thank my LLCC family for the continuous compassionate support that allowed me to stay home and care for my husband, Mark, in his last months. I cannot thank everyone individually but please know that each kindness made going through these difficult months possible. Thank you.

Adam Watkins & Matt Shaver present “Twist the Assessment Loop”

Twist the Assessment presentation poster by Adam Watkins and Matt ShaverAdam Watkins, dean, arts and communication, and Matthew Shaver, professor, integrated media design, spent the first half of the summer presenting at two higher education assessment conferences. The two showcased work with the CourseTalk+ app that allows faculty to combine quantitative data with qualitative narratives to document and plan for curricular adjustments.
Their first presentation was to the Assessment in Higher Education Network. LLCC was the only community college in attendance and presenting.

The second presentation was an extension of the Assessment Institute hosted by IUPUI. The two will present again in the fall at the Assessment Institute where they will be one of only three community colleges.

LLCC offers three new programs this fall

LLCC is expanding to offer two new degree programs and one new certificate this fall — creative writing associate in arts, cardiovascular sonography associate in applied science and a workplace dynamics certificate.

The creative writing program offers classes, workshops and other activities such as readings and contests, accessible to writers of all levels. Courses are taught by writers trained in their specialties, whose works have been published in literary journals and with literary presses. “This is a rarity for creative writing programs at community colleges,” said Dr. Corrine Hinton, dean of English and humanities. “LLCC faculty live the passions they teach and mentor the next generation of voices from the prairie state and beyond.” The creative writing program prepares students to begin seeking publication and/or transfer to a four-year university.

Cardiovascular sonography (CVS) is LLCC’s newest sonography program and will cover two ultrasound specialty areas: adult echocardiography and vascular sonography.

“This addition to our successful sonography program will equip our students with the necessary skills to perform critical diagnostic procedures while addressing the growing the demand for cardiovascular health care professionals in our community,” said Leigh Giles-Brown, program director. The two-year associate in applied science degree program will prepare students for national credentialing examinations.

The certificate in workplace dynamics prepares students for a professional business environment. Upon successful completion of the program, students will have the skills necessary for the Microsoft certification exam.

The fall semester begins Aug. 17.

Elections class

Vote button lying in red/white/blue draping. This fall, LLCC will host a class on elections (POS-299-105) that is being co-taught by subject matter experts in political science, Professors McDonald and Vinzant. The course (along with other political science courses) is designed to help describe, explain and perhaps predict the upcoming Presidential election. The course follows a special, 12-week semester (Aug. 17-Nov. 6), designed to coincide with the election run and is open for enrollment now. This class is scheduled over lunch and LLCC faculty and staff are welcome to join the class and the conversation!

Oh Deer!
