LLCC hosted the 41st annual Illinois Association of Community College Biologists Fri. and Sat., Oct. 11 and 12, with approximately 50 attending, along with vendors. Participants saw a bird banding demonstration and heard speakers in environmental education, common core/distrance education and anatomy/physiology pre-requisite issues. Dave Cox serves as president of the organization.

Ag Club Auctioning remaining Cornhole Sets
The Ag Club is holding a Silent Auction for three sets of Cornhole (bags) game that include two boards and eight poly-resin pellet filled bags. The bidding will take place today, Oct. 11 through Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 3:00pm. Opening price for each set is $40.00 and bids can be submitted to Ag Club Advisor, Bill Harmon, via email at bill.harmon@llcc.edu. Kevin also wrote the article, “Be Prepared,” for the SJ-R’s Support Local Central Illinois section published Sept. 28.

Barb Bernardi, professor of biology and 2013 Pearson Master Teacher, penned this LLCC essay for the State Journal-Register Oct. 6. The article has gone viral in the alpaca world, with the largest alpaca resource for alpaca farms, Open Herd, featuring the article under “alpaca news,” along with the IAOBA (Illinois Alpaca Owners and Breeder’s Association) and a Great Pyrenees website.
Cultural Program Next Week!
The Student Life Office welcomes filmmaker Eliaichi “Ellie” Kimaro to campus on Monday, Oct. 14 for a presentation in the R.H. Stephens Room at 1 p.m. The Seattle-based filmmaker is a first-generation American with a Tanzanian father and Korean mother. When Ellie was older and in an interracial relationship of her own, she wanted to better understand this world her father had left behind at 18. When her father moved back to Tanzania for good, Ellie followed him to make a film about this culture. What Ellie discovered in Tanzania, in her family and in herself is the subject of her personal award-winning documentary, “A Lot Like You.”
As both a cultural insider and outsider, Ellie asked questions that most people who grew up on Mt. Kilimanjaro would never think to ask. Much to Ellie’s surprise, the stoic women in her family opened up, telling stories about trauma and survival. Ellie reconciled this culture she’s inherited with how she defines herself today as a woman, an activist and mother. “A Lot Like You” was named Best Documentary at the 30th San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival. A portion of the net proceeds from the film will help fund the construction of a girls’ dormitory at the Vunjo Secondary School in the Kimaro family village of Mwika.
PTK & SGA fundraisers to benefit fight against breast cancer
Phi Theta Kappa will be holding a “Pink and Jeans Day” on October 24th to benefit Susan G. Komen Foundation. Stop by the Student Life Office with $5 to purchase your pin to wear on that day along with your pink and jeans.
The Student Government Association is also raising money to fight breast cancer. Look for their table on Fridays in October from 11am-1pm in the Student Union and make a $5+ donation to receive a pink t-shirt!
