National Library Week begins today

The LLCC Library will celebrate National Library Week starting today, April 13 and continuing through the end of the week. During the week, the Library will give out free candy, host a daily raffle drawing, invite participants to create a “What’s Your Favorite Book?” poster, and host a variety of daily events. Please join us!

Today’s activities:
– Food for Fines begins! The first 100 people to bring in a non-perishable donation will win a free book light. You don’t have to have library fines to donate! All proceeds benefit the Central Illinois Food Bank.
– Free candy at the Reference and Access Services desks.
– Add to the “What’s Your Favorite Book?” poster.
– Daily raffle drawing! Winner will receive a $5 gift certificate to the bookstore.

Don’t forget that the Edible Books Contest starts Tuesday morning. Drop off your submissions at the LLCC Library from 7:30–10:45 a.m., and vote for your favorites between 11 a.m. and noon. Two winners will be announced at noon and will each win a $25 Barnes and Noble gift certificate!

LLCC Environmental Club Heirloom Tomato Sale

The Environmental Club is supporting sustainable food production with our fundraising efforts this spring. Let us help you grow your own tomatoes this summer. All of our tomato plants have been grown from organic seed and potted in recycled containers. They represent old, non-hybrid varieties from a variety of sources. Enjoy these treasures from the past! Please order in advance to guarantee the availability of your selections. Advance orders are due by April 19. Plants will be available for pickup by the end of April.

Prices: Individual plants are $2 each. Get any six plants for $10, or fifteen plants for $20 (your choice of varieties). A variety box of 10 plants (growers choice: color, size & type differences in every box) is also available for $15. Please use the attached order form: Environmental Club Heirloom Tomato Sale. Annual juried student art show opens April 13

LLCC’s Annual Juried Student Art Show opens April 13 in the James S. Murray Gallery on the second floor of Menard Hall. Suzanne Schmid, owner of Zanne Avenue Jewelry, served as juror for the show. The LLCC art department welcomes the LLCC community and the public to join them at a reception Thursday, April 16 from 5:30–7:30 p.m. where award winners will be announced in several categories. A special invitation is extended to all students who put forth the effort to enter their artwork for jurying. The student show will be open for viewing until May 7.

Chris McDonald to present “From Springfield to Schlestadt” Saturday

Faculty, staff and students are invited to hear Political Science Professor Chris McDonald, Ph.D., present “From Springfield to Schlestadt” tomorrow, April 11 from 9 to 10 a.m. in the Trutter Center. The public is invited to the free event.

Professor McDonald’s presentation is based on his new book,  book cover“‘Three Lying or Four Sitting’—From the Front in a Ford,” which gives an eyewitness account of World War I through the detailed, literate and humorous letters of Springfield native and Harvard student Kent Dunlap Hagler.

A book signing will follow the presentation. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Cost is $20, which includes tax. All proceeds from book sales will benefit the LLCC Foundation general scholarship fund in honor of Kent Dunlap Hagler.

In addition to the presentation and book signing, an exhibit containing WWI artifacts is being presented by the Philip and Mary Kathryn Trutter Museum.

Chris will also present at Soup and Stories next Wednesday, April 15 from noon-1 p.m. in the R.H. Stephens Room.

The total collected for the Pay It Forward fund was $130 in the Penny Wars Competition.

It’s not too late for a chance to win $150 if you make a pledge to the Foundation’s LEAGUE Campaign and donate using payroll deduction. Simply complete the LEAGUE pledge form 2015 LEAGUE Enrollment Form and return it to the Foundation by April 30.
