Environmental Club heirloom tomatoes ready for pickup

If you ordered tomato plants, your order has been filled and is waiting for you in the Biology Greenhouse in Sangamon Hall. We are hoping most of you can pick up your order between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. today, Friday, May 8, or between noon and 3 p.m. Monday, May 11. If neither of those time blocks work for you, please contact Becky Croteau (786-2369) or Peggy Goetsch (786-9622) and we will arrange to meet you.

TODAY: Health insurance meeting; Employee Recognition Ceremony

TODAY is the last opportunity to attend a health insurance information meeting. The meeting runs from 9-10 a.m. in the Robert H. Stephens Room, Menard Hall. For more information about insurance plan updates and open enrollment instructions for 2015-2016, click HERE.

The Employee Recognition and Appreciation Ceremony is being held TODAY  in the Student Union, Menard Hall. The event begins at 3 p.m. with music and hors d’oeuvres, followed by the program at 3:45 p.m. with service anniversary and retiree recognitions and award presentations including Distinguished Service, NISOD, Faculty Emeriti and Drs. Raymond and Ann Pearson Master Teacher.

Commencement planned for May 15

LLCC will conduct commencement exercises on Friday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield. Allen Dixon of Springfield has been selected as this year’s commencement speaker, and Amanda Monke of Springfield and Jonathan “Mac” Squibb of Chatham are serving as marshals. LLCC Big Band presents Jazzin’ for Jack May 11

The LLCC Big Band is presenting Jazzin’ for Jack – a Benefit Concert for CFC Syndrome on Monday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. The concert is being held at First Christian Church, 6th and Cook, Springfield.

The concert features the LLCC Big Band with Courtney Fleck, soloist; Kevin Carman, guitarist; and Alex Lang, trombonist. The band will perform vintage charts, such as “Pennsylvania 65000,” “Misty,” “Chattenooga Choo Choo,”  and “Sing, Sing, Sing,” along with funk charts, such as “September,” and “Shining Star.”

Donations are being accepted for CFC Syndrome – Cardiofasciocutaneous Syndrome.  Jack Waddell, son of Jason Waddell, instructor of music, has CFC Syndrome. Read more about CFC Syndrome HERE.

PAC “meet and greet” May 21

The Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) is planning a “meet & greet” on Thursday, May 21 from 1-3 p.m. in A. Lincoln Commons. This is an opportunity for professional staff to meet and talk with committee members. Some snacks will be provided. Please stop by and say hello!

Cuba: A Very Different System of Health Care
From a public health perspective, I can’t think of anyplace that would be more interesting than Cuba, and it certainly was. I was privileged to be part of a delegation of nursing professionals to visit Cuba last fall, before the thaw in U.S./Cuban relations. The medical system in Cuba provides free health care to all citizens and emergency care to anyone. The malpractice threat, that too often determines our medical practice, is nonexistent.
