East Asia film/lecture series kicks off Thursday evening in Trutter Center

Join Professors Paul Van Heuklom and Ashley Green this Thursday evening for the first film and discussion in the new East Asia Film and Lecture Series, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Trutter Center. hp-EastAsian-Film-SeriesThe series, in partnership with the UIUC Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies, is free and open to the public.

Thursday’s film is “Shower,” a 1999 comedy/drama and winner of Best Picture and Best Director at the 2000 Seattle International Film Festival. Discussion of the film will be led by Joy Yang Jiao, Ph.D. candidate at the Institute of Communication Research, College of Media at UIUC.

Critically acclaimed around the world, “Shower” features hilarious characters and stunning performances from well-known Chinese actors. When successful businessman Da Ming is summoned by his younger brother to come home to his father’s old-style bathhouse in Beijing, he can’t wait to return to his fast-paced modern life. But time amongst the crazy cast of characters that frequent the bathhouse gives him a new appreciation for traditional old ways. When a tragic event causes sudden change, Da Ming must choose between the prosperous life he’s made for himself and his responsibility to his family and heritage.

Bistro to Go, LLCC’s student-run cafe, opens TODAY. Hours of operation each week Monday and Wednesday from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.  Soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees, baked goods and coffee drinks are available for take-away.  Orders should be no larger than six, and no call-in orders accepted. 2015-16 Recital Series kicks off Sept. 20

Come to the Trutter Center Sunday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. for a free classical guitar recital, as the LLCC Recital Series opens its 2015-16 season. Classical guitarist Russel Brazzel will present “Classical Guitar Music: Classical to Modern.”

Mr. Brazzel, a graduate of Loyola University of New Orleans and Tulane University, has taught guitar at LLCC, Millikin University, Carl Sandburg College and Illinois College. He is a co-founder and music director of the Springfield Classical Guitar Society, In July of 2013, he performed in Bulgaria with violinist Kamen Petkov as a part of the 2013 International Chamber Music Festival.

National Suicide Prevention Week; support services at LLCC

This week is National Suicide Prevention Week and the counselors here at LLCC want to remind you that we are here to help any student that is facing a stressful, emotional situation such as a family concern, trying to balance school and work obligations, depression, anxiety, etc. Licensed counselors are on staff and always available to talk to a student needing support.If you encounter a student that may need our help, please let the student know they can walk in to Advising, Counseling and Career Development Services or call us at 786-2224 to speak to a counselor by phone or make an appointment to meet with one of us.

Part of our role is to assist in crisis situations where a student may be having suicidal thoughts or even has a suicide plan. If the student is in crisis, you can call the Counselor’s Line at 6-9660 and you will be immediately connected with a counselor. If it is after 5 p.m. or on a weekend, please call the LLCC Emergency number 786-2222 and an officer will be dispatched to assist the student. Thank you for all you do for our students and, remember, we are here to help!

23 bird species banded at LLCC’s bird banding station

The bird banding station at Lincoln Land Community College is up and running! This year, students are using a new shelter built by LLCC Bird bandingconstruction students. The male Golden-winged Warbler (photo by Stevie Emmons) was one of 88 birds of 23 species that were banded this week.

Winter Vegetable Gardening begins Sept. 14

Join Workforce Development for a rare opportunity to learn about winter vegetable production from experienced genHkids farmer Andy Heck during Winter Vegetable Gardening being held Mondays, Sept. 14-Dec. 14 from 10:30 a.m.-noon in the community garden behind Montgomery Hall.

Follow the planting and harvest through hands-on demonstration and exercises, while learning everything you want to know about growing produce year-round. Each week offers new instructions as the season changes. Gardeners can expect to learn about planting schedules, optimal planting techniques for weed reduction and space maximization, high tunnel and low tunnel technologies, pest and disease management issues specific to winter growing, and more. Participants are welcome to come for the full time or drop in for part of the time, and can come one time or come each week. Bring questions and work gloves. LLCC Police Department to offer Practical Response to Active Shooters training

The LLCC Police Department will be offering four sessions of its Practical Response to Active Shooters training in October. Sessions will be held at 9:30 a.m.  and 1:30 p.m. on both Oct. 9 and 16. Training lasts approximately two hours, and is open to all LLCC faculty, staff and students. There is a maximum of 25 students per training session, so pre-registration is required. PRACTICAL RESPONSE TO ACTIVE SHOOTERS
If you ever found yourself in an active shooter event, would you know what to do? As with any emergency situation, prior thought and planning play an immense role in our individual response to these highly stressful incidents.

Presented by members of the LLCC Police Department, this hands-on training will provide you with options regarding what to do during an active shooter incident, teach you how to do them, and then give you an opportunity to actually practice these newly learned skills in a supportive, non-stressful environment.

SURS Counselors on Campus Oct. 8

SURS counselors will again be on campus Oct. 8 to conduct one-on-one interviews with those employees within four years of eligible retirement status. If you met with SURS counselors in April, you do not qualify for an appointment this time.
