LLCC Transitioning Job Board to Handshake

LLCC is transitioning to Handshake as the college’s new job board. The college is launching Handshake to employers on March 16 and to students on April 13. The employer launch is first to ensure that when students log in for the first time, they see opportunities to keep them engaged in the job search process.

Handshake is the leading job board for colleges and universities. Its goal is to create opportunities for students and employers to engage with and contact each other.

If you have questions about current job postings, please contact Cathy Huffman or Marina Wirsing, LLCC career coaches.

If you have questions about internships, and/or structured learning program opportunities, please contact Brenda Elliott, director of work-based learning.

Changes in LLCC Advancement

In spring 2022, Dr. Warren formed an ad hoc team to discuss and make recommendations regarding career assistance for LLCC students. Part of the recommendation from this team was to bring together similar services into a single unit. To implement this recommendation, the college is combining business relations, career services and work-based learning into the LLCC Division of Advancement. The advancement team is excited that the following are joining our team:

  • Cathy Huffman, Career Coach
  • Marina Wirsing, Career Coach
  • Brenda Elliott, Director of Work-Based Learning

Due to the construction in Menard Hall and the lack of space that comes with it, Cathy, Marina and Brenda will continue to be in their same office locations.

Student Services on the move

Starting on Nov. 22, movers will begin relocating LLCC Student Services staff in Menard Hall to their temporary locations in the Millennium Center and lower level of Sangamon Hall. Earlier this fall, Accessibility Services moved to the Millennium  Center and Testing to Logan Hall.

The upcoming moves will be phased over the final few weeks of 2022 with the hope that each department will be settled into their temporary locations in early 2023.  This has required a lot of hard work and coordination by all involved, and we will ask for everyone to be patient as these new locations will take some adjustments for both students and staff.  Future announcements will be coming from each department within Student Services as to “where to find them” soon.

LLCC and Memorial Health offering apprenticeship program beginning in August

Gloved hands working with medical tools on a trayLLCC and Memorial Health are partnering to offer a one-year, Department of Labor approved, paid apprenticeship program to train sterile processing technicians (SPTs).

SPTs are allied health professionals responsible for the sterilization, assembly and ordering of equipment used by physicians and nurses during medical procedures, including surgeries.

Interested individuals will first apply for admission to the 16-week central sterile service certificate program at LLCC. During this program, if students are interested in the apprenticeship option, they will have the opportunity to participate in a competitive selection process in order to earn their apprenticeship. The apprenticeship program will allow students to receive on-the-job, paid training at Memorial Health. A job with Memorial Health is targeted upon successful completion of the one-year apprenticeship.

“Sterile processing technicians are a vital part of the surgical and medical team and are in high demand,” said Dr. Cynthia Maskey, dean of health professions at LLCC. “They also gain experience that can put them on a career path to becoming a surgical technologist, registered nurse or other health care professional.”

“We’re pleased to partner with LLCC to offer individuals an opportunity to enter a health care career in a short amount of time and be paid while training,” said Dr. Elisabeth Klar, Memorial Health senior vice president and chief human resource officer. “Students who have just completed high school, as well as adults looking to start or change careers, are eligible to participate in this apprenticeship program, with a targeted job after completion.”

The program begins in late August. Interested individuals should first apply to LLCC (www.llcc.edu/apply). After being accepted to the program, they will then apply for the paid apprenticeship through Memorial Health. A four-week timeline is required for a background check, drug screen, physical and interview/job shadow. Participants will commit to one year of employment with Memorial Health upon program completion.
