GSA virtual event

All Day, April 24. Day of Silence. Sponsored by GLSEN. Instagram: @gsa_llcc, Facebook: LLCC GSAThe GLSEN Day of Silence is a national student-led demonstration where LGBTQ students and allies  all around the country — and the world — take a vow of silence to protest the harmful effects of harassment and discrimination of LGBTQ people in schools. This year due to the quarantine, we are going virtual! We will be combining the LLCC Gay-Straight Alliance’s yearly Speak Out event with the Day of Silence to bring awareness about LGBTQ+ discrimination in schools and to “break the silence.” LGBTQ+ students and allies are welcome to join in on the silence by registering. Posts will be made to GSA Facebook and Instagram pages throughout the day starting at 10 a.m. (Instagram: GSA_LLCC Facebook: LLCC GSA).

If you would like to join in, feel free to send a video or photo of why you are being silent to our Instagram or email GSA president Ci Richardson at crich8642@llcc.edu.

The Lamp student newspaper wins multiple awards

The Lamp student newspaper won 16 awards, including five first-place awards, at the Illinois Community College Journalism Association’s annual student awards presentation April 17. The awards were presented virtually via the association’s Facebook page due to cancellation of the conference.

The Lamp staff won first place for website. “That’s a great award because the website takes a team effort to have stories and editors,” said Tim McKenzie, adviser of The Lamp and professor of journalism and humanities. “It also prepared us for the new reality when the physical campus closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The students were able to continue producing content online.”

TheLampOnline.com has continued to be led by Regina Ivy of Springfield, editor; Tess Peterson of Springfield, assistant editor; and Ryan Scott of Chatham, assistant editor. Ivy was the recipient of the annual $1,000 scholarship awarded by the association to one community college journalism student who is transferring to a four-year college or university. This is the second year in a row that an LLCC student has won the award.

Keeping students engaged through Student Life videos/live meetings

Lincoln Land Community College Student LifeLLCC Student Life has been hard at work thinking of creative ways to keep students engaged and connected with one another and the campus during this time. One thing we would like to do is create some opportunities for learning and fun outside of classes. We would like to create videos or live meetings surrounding different topics with which our students can engage. This is where we could use your help!

We are looking for faculty and staff interested in volunteering their time to connect with our students outside of class. Do you have a topic you could present on or share with our students? This could be journaling, knitting, dancing, meditating, yoga, cooking demonstrations, dog training, cultural awareness, fitness, plant or bird identification, etc. Even if you have a fun lesson that is applicable outside of class (science or social experiment, mini history lesson, creative writing tips, etc.) these will be great! The possibilities are endless!

We will do the promotion and marketing for these videos/live meetings. If you would like to help us keep students engaged, please email LLCC Student Life at StudentLife@llcc.edu letting us know your ideas. If you do not have something in mind but still want to help us out, we have some programs already picked out that we could use your help with. Thank you in advance for helping us keep our students connected!
