Winter Art Sale Preview Party tonight

The 2nd annual Winter Art Sale kicks off this evening with a preview party from 5 to 7 p.m.  For a $10 cover, guests receive a first-opportunity to browse and buy art, plus gourmet hors d’oeuvres by LLCC students and music by Virgil Rhodes and Footprints.  A cash bar will be available.  Reservations are suggested by calling 786.2785.

A wide variety of original artwork from ceramics to fine art created by LLCC students is reasonably priced and ready for holiday gift giving.

Continuing on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 1 and 2, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., the sale is free and open to the public with coffee and cookies served.  Proceeds will support art students and the Trutter Museum.

Murray Gallery opens new exhibit today

The James S. Murray Gallery will feature “Intangible Tangibility: an exploration of connections,” an installation by LLCC graduate Anna Mulch, Nov. 28-Dec. 15.

A reception for the artist will be held Monday, Dec. 5 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. The gallery is located on the second floor of Menard Hall and is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

“Intangible Tangibility” is a combination of Mulch’s interests and musings on their connections via the social media site, Facebook. In her artist’s statement Mulch says, “Social media is a thing that people feel they cannot live without. It allows you to reconnect with the click of a button, share your innermost thoughts and develop connections based on interests. It is now socially acceptable to develop connections without ever meeting a person tangibly. In some ways the intangible connections can be more fulfilling than the tangible ones.” Continue reading

Honors Recital Nov. 30, 7 p.m.

LLCC’s Recital Series continues Wednesday, Nov. 30 with the LLCC Honors Recital, beginning at 7 p.m. in Menard Hall room 2250.

The Honors Recital showcases the college’s top music majors along with advanced hobby musicians. The program features a wide variety of instrumentalists and vocalists. All LLCC Recital Series performances are free and open to the public.

Monday, Dec. 5 – LLCC Big Band, 7 p.m., First Christian Church, 6th and Cook, Springfield.  LLCC’s Big Band, directed by Jane Hartman, professor of music, consists of LLCC students and community members performing arrangements of big bands such as those of Count Basie and Woody Herman. It also serves as a lab band for students who wish to write original arrangements. The Big Band performs a number of public concerts each year and also at campus events.

Sunday, March 19 – Chamber Music Recital with Brickhouse Brass and Blackwater Strings, 4 p.m., Trutter Center, LLCC Springfield campus.

Wednesday, April 26 –  Honors Recital featuring LLCC music majors, 7 p.m., Menard Hall 2250, LLCC Springfield campus.

Film “Still Walking” showing tonight

The Arts and Humanities department invites you to view and discuss the film “Still Walking” this evening at 6 p.m. in the Trutter Center. Still Walking” (2009) tells of 12 years after their beloved eldest son, Junpei, drowned while saving a stranger’s life, the parents welcome their surviving children home for a family reunion. The younger son still feels that his parents resent that he isn’t the one who died, as his wife is awkwardly introduced to the rest of the family for the first time.

The event is part of LLCC’s fall film and discussion series entitled “Through a Different Lens” and is hosted by Ashley Green, Ph.D., assistant professor of English; Paul Van Heuklom, professor of English; and Joseph Hoff, Ph.D., professor of Spanish. There is no charge to attend.

Also, mark your calendar for the final film in the series “Birth of a Family” on Dec. 8.

Swashbuckling Seminar this Saturday

See how LLCC Theatre builds fights for a swashbuckling spectacular! The event is produced by LLCC Theatre and Theatre in the Park.

Mayor Langfelder visits Speech Class

protz-langfelderLLCC alum and Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder spoke to public speaking students in the class of Professor of Communication, Brenda Protz.

Langfelder told students about coming to LLCC as an adult and and getting his degree before transferring to UIS. He talked about the importance of communication in his daily life and gave students advice about giving their speeches, lessons he learned from taking speech at LLCC, as well as being involved in the local branch of Toastmasters.

langfelder-speechclass“You should practice your speeches in front of a mirror three-five times; critique yourself with videos; and speak from the heart,” said Langfelder.

He said all of his speeches are made with prepared notes and delivered from the heart, which he believes makes for a better presentation.”

Langfelder talked with the class about the recent election with president-elect Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton and offered insight into the campaigning process and what goes into play.

Winter Art ShowThe Philip and Mary Kathryn Trutter Museum and Art Department at LLCC are hosting a Winter Art Sale Thursday and Friday, Dec. 1 and 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Trutter Center on the college’s Springfield campus. This event is free and open to the public.

A wide variety of original artwork including ceramics, fine art and more is reasonably priced and would make great gifts for the upcoming holiday season.  All artwork has been created by LLCC students during the fall semester.  Purchases can be made with cash, check or credit cards.

The public is also invited to attend the art sale preview party Wednesday, Nov. 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Trutter Center. The event is $10 per person and offers an exclusive first opportunity to browse and buy art. Gourmet hors d’oeuvres will be prepared by LLCC culinary students and a cash bar will also be available.  Entertainment will feature local jazz musician and retired LLCC business faculty, Virgil Rhodes, and his band Footprints.

Fall Film Series showing today

The film “¡No!” will be shown this evening beginning at 6 p.m. in the Trutter Center. The event is part of LLCC’s fall film and discussion series entitled “Through a Different Lens” and is hosted by Ashley Green, Ph.D., assistant professor of English; Paul Van Heuklom, professor of English; and Joseph Hoff, Ph.D., professor of Spanish. There is no charge to attend.

Gael García Bernal stars in “¡No!” (2012), a film that recalls the pivotal moment in Chilean history when the citizens of the country are offered an historically unique opportunity to rid themselves of the country’s dictatorship.

Attendees are also invited to arrive early to view culturally relevant artifacts on display from the college’s Trutter collection, and view the exhibit “Trutter: Black and White,” featuring photos of landmarks designed by Philip Trutter.
