African-American Food and Vendor Day tomorrow

Tomorrow, Feb. 22, is African-American Food and Vendor Day, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will take place in A. Lincoln Commons and feature free samples of African-American food, displays exhibiting the wares of African-American entrepreneurs and music by DJ Yinka.

LLCC is celebrating African-American History Month during February with various events. Black resistance is the theme for this year’s observance and draws from a Frederick Douglass quote, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.”

Events are free and open to the public and will be held at LLCC’s Springfield campus. The LLCC African-American History Month Committee and LLCC Student Life are event co-sponsors.

Annual Lincoln Lecture today, 9 a.m. in Trutter

Bob BunnYou’re invited to the annual Lincoln Lecture this morning at 9 a.m. in the Trutter Center  (also available via Zoom,
meeting ID: 817 3502 5674). “The Bunns and the Lincolns: A Family Friendship 1840-1882” will be presented by Bob Bunn. He will focus on John and Jacob Bunn, who were good friends and business associates of the Lincoln family. John Bunn also served as a pallbearer at President Lincoln’s funeral.

LLCC campus: Lincoln Bingo tomorrow, Feb. 14, with Lincoln cookies in A. Lincoln Commons from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. Lincoln Jeopardy this Thursday, Feb. 16, and Lincoln-themed games on Friday, Feb. 17. Games will include a mini log cabin building competition and online Lincoln trivia.

LLCC-Jacksonville: Live streaming of the Lincoln Lecture by Bob Bunn. Also, a week-long scavenger hunt to learn about the life of Abraham Lincoln and a chance to win a gift card. There will be cookies and snacks for students and staff available all day today, Feb. 13, and on Friday, Feb. 17, a group of students will travel to Springfield to visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

LLCC-Taylorville and -Litchfield: Live streaming of the Lincoln Lecture by Bob Bunn. Information on local Lincoln attractions will be dispersed, a “Design a Selfie with Lincoln” station and refreshments will be available.

Annual Lincoln Lecture, Feb. 13

Bob BunnLLCC invites the public to its annual Lincoln Lecture, which will be held this Monday, Feb. 13, at 9 a.m. in the Trutter Center on the LLCC campus.

“The Bunns and the Lincolns: A Family Friendship 1840-1882” will be presented by Bob Bunn. He will focus on John and Jacob Bunn, who were good friends and business associates of the Lincoln family. John Bunn also served as a pallbearer at President Lincoln’s funeral.

There is no charge to attend, and refreshments will be served.

The Bunn family has been in Springfield since 1840, and Bob Bunn is a fifth-generation member of the family. Bob attended the University of Virginia, earning a bachelor’s degree in American history, followed by an MBA in finance from the University of Colorado. He returned to Springfield in 1981 and worked for Bunn Capitol, a family food distribution company dating back to 1840, and Bunn Gourmet, a food and chocolate business, before retiring in 2020. For the last three years, he has researched the Bunn family history and uncovered many stories of the Lincoln and Bunn families from 1840 to 1882.

LLCC Outreach Centers in Jacksonville, Beardstown, Taylorville and Litchfield also plan various Lincoln-themed activities to commemorate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.

LLCC announces 2023 regional Academic Challenge winners

Approximately 185 students from 13 area high schools competed in the regional Academic Challenge held Feb. 8 at LLCC. Students competed as individuals and as teams (of up to 14 students) testing in their choice of two subjects — biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics and physics. Prior to the competition, LLCC hosted exhibits for students to learn about opportunities at the college. Also, thanks to support from the LLCC Foundation, two $250 LLCC scholarships were awarded at the event.

Dr. Jason Dockter, interim vice president, academic services, spoke to participants and Mac Warren, assistant director, recruitment and response, served as emcee. The regional competition was organized Dr. Justin Cobb, assistant professor of biology.

Academic Challenge in Cass Gym this morning

LLCC is hosting the annual regional Academic Challenge, a test-based competition, this morning in Cass Gym. Students from 13 area high schools in the LLCC district are participating in the regional level competition. Subjects tested are biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics and physics.

The academic challenge, hosted by more than 40 community colleges and universities in Illinois and Missouri, is sponsored by the physics department and engineering program at Eastern Illinois University.
