Library services for summer 2020

As always, the LLCC Library faculty and staff are here for you and your students, and we will continue to serve you and your students remotely over the summer semester.

The LLCC Library faculty members are available on the schedule below to assist with research, reference and information literacy instruction. They can help you and your students in a variety of ways, including through email, Teams or Zoom sessions or chat. They can coordinate information literacy instruction for your classes that may include learning modules, guides or videos. They also can work with you toward creating specific course- or assignment-based content to help your students succeed with information literacy. Students can make appointments with them by emailing and setting up an appropriate time and method of communication. They are ready to work with you and your students! Just contact one of them via email to start the conversation.

All LLCC Library faculty and staff are available to help Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Kate Volk named 2020 Dick Dhabalt Athlete of the Year

Kate VolkKate Volk has been named the 2020 recipient of the Dick Dhabalt Athlete of the Year Award at LLCC.

During the 2019 volleyball season, Volk helped lead the Loggers to 32 wins. Her season assist total is second in LLCC history along with 50 more assist matches than any other setter in school history. Her assist total led all of NJCAA volleyball in 2019.

Volk finished third on the team in digs and fourth in blocks. For her success on the court, Volk was named NJCAA 1st team All-American, MWAC Player of the Year and 1st team All-Region 24. In the classroom, Volk completed the year with a 4.0 GPA and was named to the NJCAA Academic All-American squad.

“Kate had a great season for us, but what I appreciate beyond the skills are her intangibles such as work ethic and integrity,” said Jim Dietz, LLCC head volleyball coach. “When you have an award like this, you want to make sure the winner upholds the standards Mr. Dhabalt set in his service to LLCC, and I think Kate is a perfect example of those values. Better still, regardless of this award, Kate will not stop putting the work in to get better. As a coach, you always love players like her.”

The LLCC Dick Dhabalt Athlete of the Year Award was established in February 2015 in honor of Mr. Dhabalt, former athletic director, head men’s basketball coach and faculty member, and acknowledges his dedication to education, athletics and students at LLCC.

In the community

Tony Rothering, professor of biology, recently held a bird banding event at Nipper Wildlife Sanctuary (south of Loami). The data collected helps inform the sanctuary of the diversity of bird species present and the quality of habitat. For safety considerations, the event was not open to the public and CDC recommendations were followed.

Tech tip: Find and follow sites on SharePoint

When selecting the SharePoint app from the list of online applications in Office 365, you will be taken to the homepage for all of SharePoint. This is your place to find department group sites and portals (i.e., Employee Portal), read news posts from group sites and portals, or search for content.

The homepage is broken into sections:

  • At the top, there is a “Search in SharePoint” feature.
  • To the left, you will see categories for “Following,” “Recent” and “Featured links.”
  • In the center, you will see “News from sites,” “Frequent sites” and “Suggested sites.”

To search for a site, file or person in the organization, type in the search box. Matches will appear as you type. Select it from the results to open and view. Selected search results will open in a separate browser window.

“News from sites” highlights updates from sites you follow or visit often.

“Frequent sites” shows sites you like to go to and recent activity.

“Suggested sites” appear based on recent searches you’ve done and recommendations from the Microsoft Graph.

“Following” shows all the sites you follow, such as your team site or a site from another group you work with. To follow a SharePoint site, go to where it is and select the star  next to the site’s name.

“Recent” highlights any SharePoint sites you’ve gone to recently.

“Saved for later” lists news posts you’ve saved to read later. To save a news post for later, select the save-for-later flag  at the bottom of the news post. (Note: This section will only appear if you have saved items.)

“Featured links” displays sites your organization wants to spotlight.

Message from the president

Lincoln Land Community College is committed to respect and compassion as we celebrate the differences among people, cultures and ideas. These are included in our stated values and should guide all that we do. As our country and our communities grapple with the senseless death of George Floyd and others before him, it is time for us as a college community to reaffirm our commitment to equity and inclusion. These have to move well beyond aspirations to practices that are engrained in all that we do.

I cannot begin to comprehend the sadness, sense of loss, or anger that our African American community is experiencing. I do know that it will take all of us working together to continue to build a learning and working environment that is free from all forms of harassment and discrimination.

Charlotte Warren, Ph.D.
President
Lincoln Land Community College
