PTK Silent Auction Thursday to benefit Henson Robinson Zoo

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society will hold a Silent Auction in A. Lincoln Commons Thursday, April 17 from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m.  Proceeds from the Silent Auction will benefit the Henson Robinson Zoo. Several baskets containing items donated by local businesses will be up for auction. Click Silent Auction Descriptions to see detailed descriptions and pictures of the baskets.

In conjunction with the Silent Auction will be a Bake Sale, with proceeds benefitting LLCC’s Alpha Epsilon Kappa chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

ARRGH! CAPTAIN RON IS RETIRING!

balloon_retirementAfter 27+ years at Lincoln Land, Ron Gregoire is leaving the helm of Admissions & Records and sailing off into retirement. To celebrate his years of service to the college, Ron’s staff will host an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, April 28, in the Records Office. Make plans now to join us … there will be treats! We also will be collecting cards, if you care to bring one. The party has a nautical theme and sailing jargon is welcomed but no salty language, please!

LLCC Big Band to perform on campus

The LLCC Big Band will perform during the lunch hour in A. Lincoln Commons on Wednesday, April 16 from noon to 1 PM. Please bring your lunch and enjoy fun, danceable big band music during hour lunch hour!  We have singers, too!

The band is directed by Jane Hartman.

Annual Battle of the Bands scheduled for April 25

The Student Life Office invites the public to the annual “Battle of the Bands” competition Friday, April 25. Door open at 5:30 p.m. and bands will perform from 6-10 p.m. in the Trutter Center on the Springfield campus.

Bands include The Blind Social, Built in a Day, Dog of Panic, Full Chroma, Geoff Leathers, Negative 17, Open D and Trepidus.

The event is co-sponsored by the LLCC Student United Way. There is no admission charge; however, donations will be accepted for United Way of Central Illinois. Door prizes include a karaoke video machine, and commemorative T-shirts will be available.

Biology Professor Tony Rothering holds a Cooper’s Hawk caught on campus last Wednesday

Cooper's HawkThe Cooper’s Hawk belongs to a group of raptors called accipiters.  They have short, broad wings and long tails and specialize on foraging on other birds. Because of their maneuverability and predatory nature, they are often thought of as the “fighter planes” of the bird world.  This hawk has the ability to fly through a woodland and, literally, snag birds right off of their perches.  They also will regularly stake out backyard feeders and capture inattentive birds.  This particular species is about the size of a crow with females being larger than males (typical with most birds of prey).  This species is found in Illinois year around and their numbers have been increasing as of late.

Member of Jim Jones’ People’s Temple in Guyana to speak at LLCC Wednesday

Deborah Layton, a high-level member of Jim Jones’ People’s Temple in Guyana, who escaped the cult in 1978, will speak at Lincoln Land Community College Wednesday, April 16. The 1 p.m. presentation will be held in the Trutter Center.

Ms. Layton left the cult just months before over 900 people drank cyanide punch and committed “revolutionary suicide.” A book signing will follow the presentation, which is entitled, “Seductive Poison: A Jonestown Survivor’s Story of Life and Death in the People’s Temple.”

The event is sponsored by LLCC Student Life.

Subway receives Public Health Award

subwayThe Sangamon County Department of Public Health presented a 2013 Gold Award April 11 to the LLCC Subway. The award is presented to food service establishments which have demonstrated their commitment to food safety in the past year. The criteria include maintaining an inspection score with few demerit points and having no violations that require a return visit.
