Packed house hears international students at Soup and Stories

SSInternationalStudentsThe April 22 Soup and Stories featuring international students packed the R. H. Stephens Room. Panelists described differences in their native cultures and what they have experienced living in the U.S. And, we all discovered that Dr. Beth Wiediger, professor of psychology, speaks fluent Portuguese, having grown up in Brazil! Beth, who moved to the U.S. while in high school, assisted a Brazilian student by translating for him at the event.

Congratulations Thom Whalen!

Thom Whalen oil on canvasThom Whalen, professor of art, has been selected to exhibit paintings, prints and sculpture at “Focus 4: Four Solo Exhibitions” at the Illinois State Museum Chicago Gallery, now through August 15. The gallery is located in the James R. Thompson Center, 100 West Randolph. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A press release from the gallery states: Thom Whalen’s (Chatham IL) art has a glow like stained glass; a psychedelic, highly crafted world of writhing sensual forms stretched taught across the picture plane. Whether monochromatic or with saturated color, Whalen’s paintings hard peddle the art of horror vacui, punctuating every square inch of the canvas with graphically stunning imagery. Curated by Robert Sill, Assistant Director of Art, Illinois State Museum, Springfield.

Thom will conduct a gallery talk at the museum Friday, April 25 at 4 p.m.

Congratulations Thom!
