The College’s annual open enrollment period for the Life Insurance and the Long Term Disability Insurance programs has begun. Open enrollment ends November 22, 2013. Enrollment a memo with forms have been put in your office mailboxes. Please review both insurance forms. The LTD form must be returned with an election. The life insurance form does not need to be returned if you are not electing additional coverage. Silent Auction a success; thank you!
Career Development Services would like to thank everyone who helped make this year’s Silent Auction bigger and better than ever. We made $616.00 which will go directly into the Career Development Services Emergency Fund to help our students with the little emergencies that arise during the semester. This money is also used to help students purchase a computer from the Computer Banc. There are still some great items left that were not bid on, so we will do our traditional “Let’s Make a Deal” in the Menard hallway sometime in the next few weeks.

TSU donates to Taylorville Memorial Hospital
The Taylorville Student Union (TSU) had a bake sale on Oct. 15 to raise funds for the Taylorville Memorial Hospital Mammography Assistance Program. TSU raised $80 and presented to the donation to Linda Sloan with the Taylorville Memorial Hospital Foundation. LLCC Board meets at Hillsboro Area Hospital
The LLCC Board of Trustees conducted its October meeting Wednesday evening in an addition to Hillsboro Area Hospital which houses LLCC nursing classrooms and labs.
Dean of Health Professions Dr. Cynthia Maskey relayed the history of the partnership between LLCC and the hospital, which began with a $250,000 state grant in 2004 to provide nursing and emergency medical technician training to Hillsboro area students. The partnership was enhanced through construction of the new addition to the hospital which allowed the programs, in 2010, to move into state-of-the-art facilities on site.
LLCC Board Chair Justin Reichert thanked the hospital and commended the partnership which has trained hundreds of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants and emergency medical technicians, and provides clinical space for other LLCC health professions programs.
Scott Stallman, executive director of the educational service area comprising Hillsboro, Litchfield and Taylorville, presented information to the board regarding a nearly two percent increase in enrollment this fall in that area, and increases of nearly eight percent in Taylorville and three percent in Litchfield/Hillsboro in the amount of credit hours students are taking. He also noted the success of special opportunities offered to high school students including dual credit classes and the HEAT (Higher Education Academic Transfer) and PACT (Professional Accelerated Career Training) programs.
In related board action, trustees approved a resolution seeking approval from the Illinois Community College Board for a renovation and code compliance project at LLCC-Taylorville. The estimated $1.9-million project would be paid for through protection, health and safety funds.
And, trustees received and filed the fiscal year 2013 external audit. LLCC once again received an unqualified or “clean” opinion on the audit, which was performed by Sikich, LLP, of Springfield. Chair Reichert congratulated college administration on the consistency of positive audit reports.

“College (Un)Bound: The Future of Higher Education and What It Means for Students” by Jeffrey Selingo is available in the LLCC Bookstore at a reduced price of $18 for college employees. Selingo, editor at large for “The Chronicle for Higher Education,” is the keynote speaker for Professional Development Day next Tuesday, Oct. 29.

LLCC Chemistry and Environmental Clubs invite K-5 students to free “Haunted Lab” Oct. 30
The LLCC Chemistry Club and Environmental Club are hosting a “Haunted Lab” on Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 6-8 p.m. Faculty and staff are invited to bring their children in grades K-5 to campus to see “spooky” science experiments conducted by club members under the direction of faculty advisors. Children are welcome to wear Halloween costumes to the event.
The experiments will be conducted in rooms 2213 and 2215 on the upper level of Sangamon Hall. Shows will begin every half-hour, at 6, 6:30, 7 and 7:30 p.m. Children will see bubbles, fire, animals, and much more as they learn about science. They can also participate in hands-on activities across the hall in room 2216 while waiting for shows to begin. Halloween treats will be available for purchase.
Parents will receive information on fun science activities to do at home.

Wellness screenings, second chance!
If you were unable to participate in the recent wellness screening, you still have an opportunity to participate. You can register to do a remote screening conducted at a local LabCorp facility. Follow the instructions in the attached document (link below). The screening is free, as well as a flu shot, for employees who are on a LLCC health insurance plan. Remote screen participants will have to get the flu shot from a healthcare professional or certified provider, such as a pharmacy, and bring the receipt to the Human Resources office for reimbursement. Remote screening participants are also eligible for a $50 Visa gift card! Registration and completion of the screening must occur by Nov. 1, 2013 in order to be eligible for this wellness program.
