Paul Van Heuklom, professor of English, will perform a Native American flute concert in the LLCC Recital Series on Sunday, May 1. The 4 p.m. performance in the Trutter Center on the LLCC Springfield campus is free and open to the public.
Van Heuklom is a member of the Sangamon Valley Flute Circle. Although he views the Native American flute as primarily a meditative and solo instrument, he has performed at such diverse venues as Blackburn College, the Decatur Lakeside Music and Arts Festival, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, the Mary Bryant Home for the Blind, Springfield High School Multicultural Festival, LLCC Multicultural Fest and Recital Series, and the Clinton, Ill. 4th of July Celebration.
The recital is the final in the 2015-16 season.
The Lamp won the top staff award and 10 other individual journalism awards at a recent statewide competition.
The awards were presented April 8 during the Illinois Community College Journalism Association conference held at Harold Washington College in Chicago.
This is the second year in a row that Lamp staff won first place in the Mike Foster General Excellence Award. The Lamp’s editor is Madison Mings of Springfield, print editor is Isaac Warren of Springfield and online editor is Teresa Brummett of Salisbury. “We have a great group of people, each putting out great work,” said Tim McKenzie, assistant professor of journalism and humanities and The Lamp advisor. “A newspaper requires a lot of contributors, many working behind the scenes. This award reflects on how everyone is doing a great job, especially our editors.” Continue reading
On Tuesday, April 19, biology classes of David Cox will be fishing on Lake Macoupin behind Menard and Sangamon Halls between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Professor Cox invites the LLCC community to join them. Some rods and supplies will be available for use.
Dr. Chris McDonald, professor of political science, captured American White Pelicans with his camera near campus Wednesday morning. The photos show how they “fish” for a meal. These pelicans sweep their bill through the water using the big sack of skin like a net then they drain all the water out by putting the tip down — then toss back the contents — which as you can see is quite a lot of fish!
MYTH: ALL AUTISTIC PEOPLE ARE SAVANTS.
FACT: Like the character in Rain Man, many people think that all autistic people are capable of extreme feats of memorization and other amazing skills. While it’s true that some savants are autistic, not everyone with an autism spectrum disorder has these capabilities.
LLCC’s Annual Student Art Show is now open in the James S. Murray Gallery on the second floor of Menard Hall. Robert Sill, curator of art for the Illinois State Museum, served as juror for the show.
