Facts about Autism: #8

MYTH: AUTISM IS CAUSED BY VACCINES.

FACT: There is no link between autism and vaccines. In 1998, a British doctor named Andrew Wakefield published a paper that linked the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine to autism and thereby created a kind of mass hysteria.  But further studies have shown absolutely no link between vaccines and autism.  In fact, Dr. Wakefield’s paper has been officially retracted and his medical license revoked.

More LEAGUE Winners Announced

Congratulations to Tera Spellbrink, the winner of $235 from the LEAGUE 50/50 drawing, and to Leanne Roseberry, who won the portable gas grill and IL State Fair Pork Package.

Thanks to all who purchased tickets in support of the LEAGUE Campaign, which benefits our programs and students like Tess Tyler, who is from a family of six and the first of her siblings to attend college. Her parents can’t afford to assist her financially and she receives no financial aid from grants. With the help of a Foundation scholarship, Tess will graduate from LLCC this May with a 4.0 GPA and pursue her dream of becoming an English teacher.

If you would like to make a donation to the LEAGUE Campaign to help students like Tess, please complete the LEAGUE enrollment form and return to the Foundation office.  Make your donation by April 29 using payroll deduction and you will be eligible to win $150 in cash.

For more information call the Foundation at 786-2785.

CCTC offers leadership training free to employees

The Capital City Training Center is offering LLCC employees the opportunity to attend a free leadership training course this Thursday, April 14, 1-4 p.m. If you are interested in participating, please email laurel.bretz@llcc.edu by the end of the day Wednesday, April 12.

O’Shea Builder’s Director of Employee Development and Engagement, Tess Fyalka, will be piloting “Building Effective Teams,” a leadership training class, at the Capital City Training Center and is looking for individuals to participate and provide her with feedback on how she can fine tune the class. There is no cost to register as it is a pilot program.

Attendees will participate in a team simulation experience designed to help them better understand the following:

  • What makes an effective team
  • How to create an effective team
  • How to minimize dysfunction and build a positive team culture
  • How to recognize and better manage the 5 key stages of effective teams

Condolences to Tamie Penning

Our sympathy goes out to Tamie Penning, project and web services manager, on the passing of her brother, Cliff Ehlert, Jr.  Services and burial will take place April 15 and 16. For more information, view the obituary.  In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made directly to the family for Mackenzie’s education.

Facts about Autism: #7

MYTH: AUTISM CAN BE CURED.

FACT: There is no cure for autism – in fact, some in the autism community find it offensive to say that they need to be “cured.”  However, when children receive early and intensive behavioral therapy, they often develop the social and communication skills they lack, and can be so effective that the child will eventually move off the spectrum and function normally in almost every area of life.  But such treatment is still not a “cure.”
