PTK Parking Spot RaffleToday is the final day to purchase your raffle tickets for the Phi Theta Kappa Parking Spot Raffle!  The winner of this popular raffle gets to park in the specially-marked spot right next to Menard Hall for the next eight months.  Ask our last winner, Trudy Stutzman, just how convenient this parking spot is for employees who work in Menard Hall!

Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5, and may be purchased in the Student Life Office.  Ticket sales will end at 3:00 on today, at which time the winning ticket will be drawn.

Attend the LLCC Video Game Design Tournament April 28!

Faculty, staff and students are invited to the first LLCC Video Game Design Tournament Thursday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in A. Lincoln Commons. Seven student teams are finalizing their work and will be ready to show the college community their games. Tournament attendees will have access to try out the games and use their smartphones to vote for best game, most innovative game and most enjoyable game. Student teams can win prizes provided by sponsors including an iPod Touch, flash drives, portable hard drives, graphic tablets, studio headphones and 3D modeling/rendering software. Many students on the teams are enrolled in the Video Game Design I course taught by Matt Shaver, professor of digital media. Some team members have completed art or music courses to complement their team, and some student teams have reached out to friends in the music department, tapping into their creative energies to create both music and sound effects. Jason Waddell, associate professor of music, will provide live music via his improv band at the event. Don’t miss it!

Edu 215 Make A Wish Make a WishThe LLCC-Jacksonville’s EDU 215 class was recognized by Ashley White of Make-A-Wish-Illinois for collecting more than $6,000 for the organization.  The class of nine students lead several fundraising events and were also assisted by the Presbyterian Day Care Center and Walmart to reach their goal in only a few months.

Instructor Linda Chriswell and student James Charles were interviewed by the LLCC newspaper The Lamp, The Source newspaper and WLDS/WEAI radio station.

Brown Bag Presentation today on exploring China

Please join us for a brown bag presentation by Todd McDonald, vice president, administrative services, and Carmen Allen, professor, computer programming, entitled, “Exploring China – Touring, Food and Education.” The presentation will be held from noon-1 p.m. today in the R. H. Stephens. Todd and Carmen recently returned from a trip to China as part of their doctoral program. Bring your lunch and enjoy a look at this fascinating country.

Jason Waddell, associate professor, music, was interviewed by WTIM radio in Taylorville regarding the new audio production certificate being offered at LLCC.

The certificate is targeted to students interested in designing and implementing audio production in the home studio environment, as well as live sound applications of audio production in the professional world. Students will learn the basics of music theory, aural listening and keyboard skills, and the equipment and techniques needed to produce high quality audio recordings for various media.  Learn more.

 

LLCC student athlete wins research trip aboard ship next month

LLCC first-year student and men’s basketball player Alex Portwood has been selected to participate in a National Science Foundation STEMSEAS experience aboard a research vessel travelling from San Diego to Honolulu next month.

The STEMSEAS (Science Technology Engineering Math Student Experience Aboard Ships) program gives students the opportunity to spend approximately 10 days on a ship working with mentor faculty on geoscience and oceanography activities. Students take part in an array of scientific research practices and techniques during the voyages.

Portwood was among hundreds of students from across the country who applied for the program. He will participate in the seagoing experience from May 8–19 with all expenses paid.

“Alex is an outstanding student and student athlete,” said Dean Butzow, LLCC professor of geography. “He completed an extensive application and interview process to reach this point. This is an incredible opportunity and LLCC will be well represented on the Pacific Ocean! I am proud to be a part of higher education where there are so many unique opportunities like this that give students the chance to learn and grow.”  Continue reading
