Open Educational Resources: Promoting student success through collaboration adn innovation. Remix Me, Share the Love, Free and Open, Remix, Reuse, Repurpose, Educate Me, You Complete my OER.Join us on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Menard 2202, for our workshop: “Open Educational Resources: Promoting Student Success Through Collaboration and Innovation” with,

  • Dr. Erin Shanle, assistant professor, biology
  • Jan Dowell, adjunct instructor, biology
  • Leslie Ross, librarian and associate professor

Open educational resources are free and openly shared resources, including textbooks, that can be customized for specific courses in most disciplines. For the past year, LLCC has participated in a SCOERs (Support for the Creation of Open Educational Resources) grant through FIPSE (the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education) at the U.S. Department of Education. The purpose of this grant is to develop, improve and expand OERs throughout the state, increasing student success through increased awareness and adoption of OERs. In this workshop, LLCC faculty who are part of this grant project will discuss the creation and implementation of an OER for a course on human nutrition, including a discussion of the successes achieved and challenges encountered. Participants will leave with a better understanding of how one might create an OER, the benefits of doing so and tips on how to overcome difficulties in the OER creation process.

Faculty participants will receive one point toward their Training and Innovation professional development total for successful completion of this workshop. Please register for this event.

TWO NURSING FACULTY AWARDED $10,000 FELLOWSHIP GRANTS

Casey Hoenes, assistant professor of nursing, and Joi Kazenski, professor of nursing, have been awarded $10,000 Nursing Educator Fellowship Grants from the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE). The fellowships are awarded to “help retain well-qualified nursing faculty at institutions of higher education that award degrees that lead to a registered nurse licensure.” They were among 80 nurse educators from Illinois colleges and universities to receive the awards. This is the second pair of nursing faculty to receive this award. Leslie Catalano and Bridgette Hudson received the award in 2023.

Hoenes is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in nursing education. He says, “This grant helps me by directly paying for Ph.D. classes and helping pay back existing loans.” Kazenski received her Ph.D. in 2020. “I was finishing my coursework at the beginning of the pandemic,” she said. “This grant will help offset the cost of the student loans I acquired when finishing my degree.”

Congratulations!

Congratulations Dr. Chris McDonald

Faculty and Administrators: It’s time to order regalia for commencement

LLCC’s Commencement Ceremony this year is on Friday, May 18. In order to make sure we have the correct regalia for you, we ask that you submit any changes from the previous year to LLCC Campus Services regarding your faculty/administrator regalia for this year’s commencement ceremony by contacting Kim Lesko at 786-2456 or kimberly.lesko@llcc.edu. The deadline for changes or additions to the regalia order is Friday, Feb. 23.

Changes include completion of a different degree or something as simple as your regalia didn’t fit correctly last year. If you do not submit any changes, we will order the same regalia that you had in last year’s ceremony.
