Phishing scam tip: Beware of urgent or threatening language in subject lines

Invoking a sense of urgency or fear is a common phishing tactic. Beware of subject lines that claim your account has been suspended, your account had an unauthorized login attempt or your email is over its storage limit. Read your emails carefully. Phishing scam tip: analyze the salutation

Is the email addressed to a vague “Valued Customer”? If so, watch out — legitimate businesses will often use a personal salutation with your first and last name. Read your emails carefully. If the email looks suspicious, disregard it and forward it to phishing@llcc.edu.

Phishing scam tip: Check for spelling mistakes

If you notice mistakes in an email, it might be a scam. Cybercriminals are not known for their good grammar and spelling. Professional companies or organizations usually have a staff of copy editors that will not allow a mass email like this to go out to its users. Legitimate messages usually do not have major spelling mistakes or poor grammar. Read your emails carefully. If the email looks suspicious, disregard it and forward it to phishing@llcc.edu.

Phishing scam tip: look but don’t click

Phishing is a fraudulent attempt to obtain personal information from you, such as passwords, banking information, etc. Such an attempt is most commonly made by email.

Look but don’t click. When you receive an email with links, hover your mouse over any links embedded in the body of the email. If the link address looks weird, don’t click on it. If you want to test the link, open a new window and type in website address directly rather than clicking on the link from unsolicited emails.

If you suspect the email is a phishing scam, don’t click on any links and forward it to phishing@llcc.edu.

In order to complete the process, it is recommended that you restart your computer this  morning to allow the changes to take place.

You will likely need to reset your default printer. Here are some links to assist you with this process:

Phishing scam tip: don’t trust the display name

Phishing is a fraudulent attempt to obtain personal information from you, such as passwords, banking information, etc. and is most commonly sent to you by email.

Don’t trust the display name. On an phishing email, the sender’s email display name may look right, but the actual email address will not. The email may look something like this:
Esteban Cruz <ecruz@secure.com> OR
Amazon <orders@amazon1.com>

The name may be correct, but the email address looks suspicious because the domain is not genuine. In the first example, the domain name should be llcc.edu, not secure.com. On the second one, the domain name should be amazon.com, not amazon1.com.

This fraudulent email, once delivered, appears legitimate because most user inboxes only present the display name. Don’t trust the display name. Check the email address in the header “From” field. If it looks suspicious, don’t open the email, and forward it to phishing@llcc.edu.

Email phishing warning

Several users have reported getting an email asking users to click on a link and verify their accounts. This email is NOT a legit email. It is a phishing attempt to acquire users logon credentials. Please disregard this message and delete the email. If you have already given your information, you should login to Web Advisor and change your password.

Phishing is a common identity theft method used by fraudulent parties. NEVER send your personal information including passwords, user IDs, credit card numbers or a Social Security Number via email. Passwords should NEVER be shared with ANYONE in any form.

To learn more about “phishing,” follow the links below:
http://www.webopedia.com/DidYouKnow/Internet/2005/phishing.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/protect/fraud/phishing/symptoms.aspx

LLCC Information and Telecommunication Systems does not solicit passwords or any other personal information via email. If you receive an e-mail message that appears to come from ITS that requests this type of information, please forward it immediately to hd@llcc.edu. Do not reply or click on any links. Again, these emails are often hoaxes (“phishing” emails), part of identity theft and fraud scams.
