Paul Simon Essay Contest submissions due March 16

Please encourage students to submit an essay in this year’s Paul Simon Essay Contest. Essays should consist of 500 typed words on the topic “How My Community College Changed My Life” and are due no later than 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16.

Students can schedule appointments in the LLCC Writing Center to get help planning and revising their essays for the contest. The top LLCC essay submission will be forwarded on to the statewide competition for a chance to win a $500 scholarship for the fall 2022 semester. Flash fiction story contest deadline extended to March 3

Due to the weather closures last week, the LLCC Writing Center is extending the deadline for submissions to the flash fiction story contest for International Writing Centers Week until Thursday, March 3.

Please encourage your students to show their love for the Writing Center. They can:

  • Stop by the Writing Center to enjoy some sweet treats.
  • Enter our flash fiction story contest for a chance to win a Quiznos gift card.
  • Schedule appointments while they are in the center to get help with any academic or personal writing projects they may be working on.

Services

Writing Tutoring

The Writing Center is a place for students to brainstorm and invent ideas; to draft, revise and edit; to collaborate with professionals; to get feedback; and much, much more. We are available to help students with any writing task for any class at any stage of the writing process. Both in-person and  Zoom appointments are available.

Classroom Visits

If you assign any type of writing in your courses, Writing Center specialists are available to visit your classroom in person, remotely via Zoom, or via a video presentation you can link in Canvas. If there are other ways the Writing Center can support your students, please let us know.

Embedded Tutoring

The Writing Center is excited to announce that we are currently piloting a new embedded tutoring program that embeds writing tutors in writing intensive courses. If you would like more information on this initiative or if you are interested in participating in this program, please contact us.

Writing Center stationed in A. Lincoln Commons Monday and Tuesday

The LLCC Writing Center will offer a mobile location on Monday, Dec. 13, and Tuesday, Dec. 14, in A. Lincoln Commons. A Writing Center specialist will be available to answer quick questions between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Monday and between noon and 3 p.m. on Tuesday. It is first come, first served. A limited number of 30-minute appointments are also available Monday-Wednesday of finals week. As usual, students should call 217-786-2341 to reserve a spot for those.

Visit the Writing Center this week for special activities

This is the week! Visit the LLCC Writing Center between Oct. 25-29 to help celebrate the National Day on Writing.

  • Browse the shelf of free books (various genres).
  • Help yourself to some Halloween candy.
  • Participate in an abridged storytelling contest. Share your short tale (10 words or fewer) on a display board in the Center and vote on your favorite(s). Contributors’ stories will also be shared on the Writing Center Facebook page for a chance to receive more likes. All authors will receive a Writing Center bag of goodies, and the author with the most “likes” will get a Starbucks gift certificate.
