An essay of 500 words or less on the topic “How my community college changed my life” gets students entered to win cash and other cool prizes, courtesy of the LLCC Foundation and Bookstore. The local winner will be entered in the statewide competition for the chance to win a $500 scholarship. Students can schedule appointments in the LLCC Writing Center to get help with their essays. Setting up time for classes to meet with the Writing Center
The LLCC Writing Center would like to remind faculty that they can bring classes to the Writing Center or request that a writing center specialist visit the classroom. We can deliver short presentations on Writing Center services in general or topic-specific presentations upon request. Writing Center celebrates journalism during November
During November, the LLCC Writing Center is celebrating writing in the field of journalism. Encourage students to visit the center to learn about writing projects associated with journalism and about specific leaders in this career field! Students can also get information about journalism blogs like “Mediashift and Zombie Journalism.”
National Day on Writing activities
Join the LLCC Writing Center in celebrating the National Day on Writing! Fall 2019 marks the fifth year that the Writing Center has held week-long activities in recognition of the National Council of Teachers of English initiative. Activities taking place this week in the lower level of the library include:
- Responding to “Why I Write” by contributing to a message board. Upload your response to the LLCC Writing Center’s Facebook page, and get entered for a goody bag drawing at week’s end.
- Taking a selfie with Edgar Allan Poe, and answer some trivia about the master of macabre.
- Enjoying some Halloween candy and pick up an LLCC Writing Center bookmark.
- Browsing the center’s shelf of free books!
Celebrating writing in the field of fire science
During October, the LLCC Writing Center celebrates writing in the field of fire science. Encourage students to visit the center to learn about writing projects associated with fire science and about specific leaders in this career field. Students can also get information about fire science/safety blogs, online journals and web sites like The Fire Research Institute, the International Association of Women in Fire & Emergency Services and the National Association of Fire Investigators.

New walk-in hours for writing center
The LLCC Writing Center is excited to announce new, formalized walk-in hours Monday-Thursday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the fall semester. Walk-in service will be located in the Writing Center behind the staircase, just opposite the Math Center. Students should sign-in for walk-in hours at the Writing Center’s front desk.
Of course, students can still make formal appointments with a faculty tutor, especially if they want to discuss a full draft of a writing assignment, and they may also come to the center during any of the center’s open hours to get help if a tutor or specialist is available, but these designated walk-in hours will allow students to receive more focused tutoring on smaller writing issues during our high-traffic hours.

Finals week hours for Writing Center
The LLCC Writing Center will be meeting with students during finals week on a walk-in basis (first come, first served) during the following hours:
Monday – 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Tuesday – 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Wednesday – 8-11 a.m. and 1-6 p.m.
Thursday – 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
