LLCC Nursing students inducted into honor society

Fifteen second-year nursing students from the LLCC Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program were inducted into the Beta Nu Chapter of the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (OADN) Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society on April 26. The students had to maintain stringent academic requirements and complete a capstone community education project to be eligible for membership.

Students were honored at a special ceremony on campus. The students received a certificate, an Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society pin and peach honor cords to wear at commencement. The co-advisors are Mary Goldstein, nursing professor, and Anatasia Till, nursing instructor.

The objective of the OADN Alpha Delta Nu Nursing Honor Society is to recognize the academic excellence of students in the study of ADN. The society encourages the pursuit of advance degrees in the profession of nursing as well as continuing education as a lifelong professional responsibility. The society also participates in the recruitment of qualified individuals into the nursing profession.

Student clubs looking for advisors

Student United Way

Young people across the country are helping to improve their local communities by giving, advocating and volunteering in the areas of education, income and health. This powerful movement, called Student United Way, is helping to advance the common good. Student United Way works in partnership with United Way of Central Illinois.

Veterans Club

The LLCC Veterans Club is established to help support soldiers to cope with civilian life, to give support to troops overseas, to perform local volunteer work and to have club functions to raise money and build friendships with other veterans.

Farmer’s Share Lunch today

The LLCC Agriculture Club is hosting its Seventh Annual Farmer’s Share Lunch today from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Trutter Center. The club is selling tickets for the meal that will include a boneless pork chop sandwich, roasted corn, potato salad, fruit, cookies, and tea or lemonade for $1. The cost represents the portion of a meal’s cost that actually goes back to the farmers who grew the food. The rest of the cost is for processing, marketing, transportation, etc. Only 125 tickets are available, and they may be purchased from any LLCC Ag Club member or by contacting club advisor Bill Harmon (786-2573 or bill.harmon@llcc.edu).

During the event, guests will also be able to test their agriculture knowledge with trivia questions from LLCC’s state champion College Bowl Team. The event is open to anyone in the campus community as an educational activity for the club.

LLCC Radiography students win awards at state conference

Morgan Bucher and Kelly AdamskiThe second year LLCC Radiography students attended the 83rd Annual Illinois State Society of Radiologic Technologists Conference in Peoria last week. The conference provides a great deal of education, networking and friendly competition for the students!

As a requirement of attending the conference, each student submits an electronic poster and/or research paper on a topic of choice. Of the 28 electronic posters submitted, Morgan Bucher was awarded second place with her poster on Agenesis of Corpus Callosum and Kelly Adamski was awarded an honorable Scholar Bowl Team – Lauren Cachera, Katie Holliday, Margie Christian and Lauren Burnsmention with her poster on Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP). Four of the students competed in the Scholar Bowl with 11 other teams and made it to the final round with a fourth place finish! The students on the Scholar Bowl team were Lauren Burns, Lauren Cachera, Margie Christian and Katie Holliday.

The students who also represented our program at the conference were Carly Abbott, Bailey Evans, Kelly Hillyer and Darby White. All are members of the LLCC Student Radiographers Association.

Sexual Assault Awareness Denim Day

In correlation with National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the LLCC Feminist Activist Coalition and SAVE Taskforce are hosting Denim Day today, April 25. For this awareness campaign and fundraiser, faculty and staff wearing denim are asked to donate a minimum $5 to LLCC Student Life. All proceeds will benefit the Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault. The fundraiser also connects with Denim Day 2018, an annual campaign that focuses on protesting destructive attitudes and misconceptions about sexual assault. Learn more about the background of this campaign.

The LLCC Black Student Union is hosting Haircut Wednesday for our LLCC students in A. Lincoln Commons today. Let students know that they can stop by and receive a free haircut from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sexual Assault Awareness Week of Action and Take a Stand Tuesday

Today is Take a Stand Tuesday. It is an opportunity for your office or you as an individual to stand with the LLCC community in our efforts to increase awareness of sexual assault while informing our community about everyday actions that we can take to prevent sexual violence and support survivors. Symbolic of the LLCC community’s refusal to be passive bystanders of sexual assault, at least one person will be “taking a stand” in A. Lincoln Commons from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2018. You are invited to choose an available half-hour time frame that works for you or your group and sign up using this link.

Tomorrow, April 25, the LLCC Feminist Activist Coalition and SAVE Taskforce will be hosting Denim Day. Faculty and staff are encouraged to participate by wearing denim tomorrow and turning in a minimum $5 donation to LLCC Student Life. BSU open mic April 24

The LLCC Black Student Union is hosting an open mic today, April 24, in A. Lincoln Commons from 5-7:30 p.m. Open mic night is a social event where LLCC students and staff have a platform to openly express their voice and talents through poetry, singing, dance, instrumental solos and spoken word. Come showcase your talents and let your voice be heard!

Congratulations to the The Lamp

Congratulations to the The Lamp for winning 13 Awards for Excellence in the Illinois Community College Newspapers competition. The awards were presented April 6 during the Illinois Community College Journalism Association conference held at LLCC.

The Lamp staff won first place for its website, first and third place awards for front page design, and third place for general excellence. “Winning first place for website was very satisfying. They upgraded the website and worked hard to make sure new content was available daily,” says Tim McKenzie, professor of journalism and humanities and The Lamp advisor. “These awards are just a sampling of the great work that a very active group of student journalists created. I am very proud of all their work.”
